I just watched The Mist. Piss-poor movie really (acting was shite) but the ending was great! Shame the guy acted like he was about to shit a 75lb turd.
Anyone have any favourite depressing movie endings? I'm a sucker for punishment.
My all-time favourite grim movie + ending:
Threads (1984) (UK)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090…Dawn of the Dead (2004) wasn't the happiest either.

OHP was just depressing because it felt like he wasn't a bad guy, just a sad lonley guy who wanted to help the woman.
The last scene where he sits in the white room looking at his photos was sad :(

he wanted to be in her husband's shoes or something and he really loved her?
- jfletcher0
yeah, and the husband was cheating, so he hated him.... wnated to expose him and have the family love him.

- Well, basically, there was this little dot, right? And the dot went bang and the bang expanded. Energy formed into matter, matter cooled, matter lived, the amoeba to fish, to fish to fowl, to fowl to frog, to frog to mammal, the mammal to monkey, to monkey to man, amo amas amat, quid pro quo, memento mori, ad infinitum, sprinkle on a little bit of grated cheese and leave under the grill till Doomsday._salisae_

The Vanishing (original) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The…)
Not the Jeff Bridges remake which totally changed the ending.

Se7en's a pretty grim movie. I think I quite enjoyed the first 95% of it, but after the end decided I'd never watch it again.
I saw it in the cinema.

I thought Children of Men was an overall grim movie (but brilliant nonetheless), but the ending, while depressing, still retained a glimmer of hope. Nice mix of emotions.
Yeah, I'm a sucker for bummer endings. The Mist's ending takes the cake. I was floored when I saw it in the theatre, couldn't stop thinking about it.
- It was a wonderful ending.
Watch the 'featurette' on the DVD, makes it even more resonant.harlequino - Yeah, I read the book and it's almost completely different from the movie (the whole film).5timuli

Oddly, I love the ending of "Big Trouble in Little China," and that it's not that he doesn't get the girl, he rejects the girl, probably cuz she's a pain in the ass.
Other grim and/or non-traditional favorite endings I like:
Children of Men
Moulin Rouge
The Crying Game
Any Shakespeare tragedy, really- Kurt Russell and John Carpenter rock. They should only make films together.ian
- Children of Men? I thought the ending was positive, or maybe I just can't remember itneverblink

Best ending ever, The Thing. Kurt Russell and Keith David sit oppposite each other as the fires blaze in the background, slowly dying out. 'What do we do?' 'We wait...'
Fantastic.
Other good uns I thought were:
28 weeks later
the original Night of the Living Dead
U-turn- The Thing... AWESOME
Spookytim - Yeah, nice one!5timuli

The Legend of Hell House is firstly a great great British Horror movie, but also has a great atmospheric ending.
Southern Comfort has the strangest ending of a movie ever I think. I love it, but wonder if they didn't just run out of money.
Watched Jin Rah last week. A so-so animé I thought. A bit ponderous and laboured. Beautifully artworked though, and for all its pondering and allusions to being a piece of 'serious grown up thought provoking drama, but drawn', the ending was really quite amazing at tying it up and making you feel it was all worth watching.
Enemy at the Gate. Best Ending. Best Grim "Futility of War" opening too imho.
Evil Dead... Fooking Awesome ending. Best Ever. Love Evil Dead 1&2. Shame Evil Dead 3 was such a pants affair.
- Shop smart.
S-mart.harlequino - Eh?
Je Ne Comprend Pas Monsieur.Spookytim - Its from Army of Darkness, 'This is my... BOOMSTICK!'ian

9th Company, a Russian film that was on Film4 the other night has a pretty grim ending - but, and I might've just been a bit Rioja'd up, it was a fucking great, curiously upbeat movie otherwise.
- Sorry - 'war movie'.detritus
