since everyone has a computer at home everyone is a designer, people don't realise the thought and emotion hat goes into what you produce. I was in a big department store just before xmas and i overheard a conversation, basically one of the girls in the store didn't like her job. the response from her colleague. go be a designer - you only need to know how to use the programmes. that kinda sums up what I mean when I say - no respect. so many people view it as just that - learning abit of software.
- Quit bitching and do something about it. Better yourself, don't give in to the bullshit and sulk.somatica
- those kind of designers (ex store clerks w/ no passion/drive to design) will be the ones who never, ever go anywhere.sintaxera
- just think...someday, they'll work for you, and then you can not give them any respect. j/ksintaxera
- although I know what you're saying.. and agree.. those people don't get hired.brains

With all due respect (haha, get it?), that's not a lack of respect, that's simply being stupid. You could say the same thing about playing guitar, trading stocks, or building furniture.
Just because some of us went to school and are "creative," and tend to put our all into what we do, doesn't mean we deserve any more or less respect from anyone. Many people work very hard to acheive their goals. A label or title doesn't mean jack.
Now, granted your superiors may treat you like shit. That's not a designer thing most likely, that's human issue. You gotta make a plan, and get your ass outta there.
Best of luck and go kick some ass. But reflect a bit on this whole 'respect' silliness. It's just that. You'll find that you start earning respect when you are lookgin for it the least.

i feel your pain. I've gotta do shit work and wear a tie.

that thread is the most depressing ever.
I have been there too. Find any other job and leave the one you have as soon as you can. At least you will have done the move and feel better. Then, you will have to find the job you deserve or "earn"...
good luck :c)

what is it that you want to do? what would make you make happy?

BULLSHIT! i am at the bottom of the gutter and i am not giving up, so your dumb ass better pull your self up by your boot straps and go get you a new job! as long as your not a moron, you can find money in this city! and if your not in nyc then your fucked...
- scribbler0
jeez - you american's are so aggressive. glad i'm not in nyc!

Scribbler. I hear you, and I am in the exact same position. What's more, I still care about doing good work. I wonder if they'll ever beat it out of me, but god help me I've gained like 15 lbs just stressing over trying to have at least SOMETHING to show for my hard work and ideas. Ideas which are being harvested, then thrown to the wayside. I want to quit, but I know pretty much every agency out thee is a clone of the last one: making decisions out of fear, designing through boardroom meetings, and lacking any real creative vision at all. Maybe we should all jump ship and go on creativity strike.
- no - go on mediocrity strike. Do something brilliant, and dont take no until someone pays you what you what.mikotondria3

I am in a similar boat but the pay is good and the work is easy. I try and fit in a few freelance jobs in a month so that I dont foget how to design things properly.
At the moment its all about the header>left nav>footer> centered fixed width :(
I should really update the folio incase a good job floats past.

Its all about what you want and where you picture yourself. If you lose track of that then you're in trouble.
Picture what you want. Once the idea crystallizes write that shit down. When you know what your goal is, whether it be the big fancy house with the 18 million cars or a satisfying creative gig that maybe doesn't pay much but makes you happy, you can start working out the best way to get there.
Trouble is we all get bogged down in crap jobs the suck the life out of you and you forget why you got into this in the first place. It just becomes drudgery.
I know it sounds like a lame ass line but if you are going in a direction that the right one right you will feel it. You may be broke at times but it will at least feel like its with a purpose. If you are young enough and don't have as many life anchors now is the time to take some chances. And if you do have those anchors, well, you gotta take some chances anyway.
Oh, and I agree with Madrish. Burn some shit.

take that negative energy / depression and use it to create new work to get a better job...I know it sounds nuts, but I have done some of my best personal work under desperate and low times...I'ts like, "I will make awesome design if it enables me to leave my current situation." Try it out!

Looks like you need to find a new job, although I personally wouldn't quit the one your in.
It's always easier to find a new job when you are already employed. Just walking out of a job can look a little erratic.

scribbler, sign up for creativepool.co.uk "autoalert". you will get at least 4 new jobs posting each day. and its with only london selected.
stay and meanwhile look for new one, find it, grap it, quit, start the new job, be happy.

It's hard man, and scary but you can't waste your life feeling like this. Your more likely to end up in a gutter after a nervous breakdown this way. Life tends to have a way of working things out...make some plans, timelines and just leap. Good luck

I used to be an account manager for a large corporate (nothing to do with design) and I upped and quit one day, borrowed some money to re-educate myself and then got a job as a designer.
Now I sit around working in a dressing gown and listening to music instead or ranting cunts talking about their account and how they should get better deals.
I also quit my last shit full time design job because it was doing uninspiring work for uninspiring clients in an uninspiring office and went full time freelance with no clients and not much in the bank and it's worked out alright too.
It can be done but you've got to stick your neck out and make it work.
I might quit design and do something else, I quite like the idea or running a ski chalet in France now.
