It's not new though... the ugly has always been around, we never got rid of it... Every second glossy mainstream, pop publication, from Oprah to Men's Health looks like dog's breakfast...

The thing that makes it all interesting is the fact that from now on there will be generations of kids who turn into adults who's whole information gathering skillset will be based on the internet. Im not talking about doing a research paper, I'm mean info they use developmentally.

Loud, bad-taste design is just another trend. Conveying a thought/message is still the number one goal of design. Perhaps 'ugly' is a good route to go if your message is thin or missing altogether.

Its harsh to compare those 2 examples though..
the one on the right with the big type is the new hot topic, mall kids with big fluo shades and headbands, on the left what is going exactly? the cover is not as loud..

Having been working in design for 20 years (yes i am an old fart, fuck all y'all) i can safely say that there is always the next big thing... but try to keep that in the context of industry within which we work. Style over content will undoubtedly work for certain areas of creative design and it will be gone just as quickly as it arrived, ephemeral change within design is healthy. But to say that a certain style will prevail/win out over another is just naive, The new ugly is the old rave which was the new punk which was... ahhh you get the picture... basically .
k i feel better now... moving on...
