When my boss explains things to clients in a meeting or on the phone he always says "I did this" or "I'll change this" as if he did it, not me or whoever else worked on it. Kind of annoying but that's the price you pay for working for someone. If you don't want to be someone's bitch, quit and work for yourself.

cball - I am glad you don't work for me. I like to thank people when I know they've put in extra effort or down a good job. Shit, I like to thank someone if we are just on schedule!

Wow, sensitive much? If it makes you feel any better, they probably don't mean it anywa and couldn't give two shits whether you did the work or some other schlub does.

Cannonball, I'd like to have a word with you in my office, please.

I think you are all missing the point. There's a certain way of thanking someone that implies that you, the person who did the work, "donated" your effort, and the thanks is little more than an indication that the project is now no longer your concern, and that the credit ultimately goes elsewhere despite your ideas.
Being thanked is a matter of creative ownership. It's where you are indicated as the origin of the creation, and if this implication is not there, its frustrating. Something that for some creative people, transcends the notion that people working for agencies should just be grateful and complacent as the wheels turn (which I am hearing from some of you).
"Thanks for all your help" sounds different than "What you did is awesome" to me. One is just "polite". The other is an actual indication the creation was engendered from you. If you are not thanked properly, you don't retain creative ownership, leaving it open to be usurped.
Lando and 5timuli seem to grasp my meaning.
I'm sorry to split semantical hairs here but it's important to me.

I get your point but really have trouble believing that whenever I am thanked the "wrong" way I am secretly being shafted by a deceitful boss. Is it really so difficult to accept sincere thanks at face value?

I've seen contracts the said everything you make (at work or at home) is owned by them. Always gave me a chuckle

Yeah. I can see it now: "Thanks for all you hard work" followed by a fake smile and a shoulder punch. It happens all the time. Then as he walks away he snickers, and scribbles out your name on the contract replacing it with his own. Checkmate.

within the company if its
your boss/manager/sales/marketing - everyone knows he cant do anything
design director - everyone knows hes too lazy to actually do anything
art director - everyone knows he claims to do everything
same level designer - punch him in the ovaries
intern - kill it with fire
bigger picture - the company gets the credit. regardless of who did it.
