Nikon. Better manual controls for under $2k models.

I don't imagine there's much difference between the two.

photo references nikon 40d and canon d40 (flickr???)

Canon is usually quicker to put out new camera's with new techniques. The Nikon ones will usually last you longer and will hold their value longer.
The main difference between the two are the range of lenses they offer. Canon often has the same type of lense in three or sometimes even four different qualities/prices (normal / ultrasonic / IS / L). Nikon on the other hand usually only has two types of the same lense (normal / ED).

yeh Canon have heaps of lenses.

Nikon has better flash system, Canon has slightly more lenses and is often a bit cheaper. Lots of studio peeps use Nikon, lots of sports shooters use Canon.
- So it's studio peeps vs. sports shooters, is it?TheBlueOne

Every professional photographer that I ever worked with whether it was a fashion, product or editorial photographer all used Canon. I worked with at least 24 individual photograhers and have about 6 of them as friends. There is a reason that Nikon is cheaper.

As far as I know, Nikon doesn't have a good fast (i.e. f/2.8) short zoom with image stabilization, but not everyone needs one.
Anyway, I just got a Canon 5D in perfect shape for a price I couldn't resist. I wanted to see what people were so crazy about with fullframe dslr. Some say the going fullframe gives you what going from 35mm to medium format is about..

Canon. But neither is bad.

I'm saving for the d300 now and in the meantime, perhaps Canon will release a FF with live view at a decent price. But I may have to wait 3-4 years for that.
Most importantly though, get good glass. Nikon's kits: 24-70, 70-200, and especially their 14-24, are truly class leading lenses. They are all 2.8 and are just wicked sharp rafalski.

I have the 70-200 and 14-24 f2.8: great lenses

with the latest batch of new models, it seems nikon has caught up or even surpassed canon in low light performance and image quality
- I'd take the D3 over the 1ds Mark III anyday!jaylarson
- was wonderin if you'd pop in. how 's the learning curve with the d300?jaylarson
- there's a lot to figure out, and I've barely scratched the surface, but I've gotten it set up so I can take pictures that are in focus!********
- in focus! I also got the tc14 to extend the reach of the 70-200********

- the tc14 brings the range to about 420. nice. my canon powershot does 38-432 but it is only 5 mp. *turns green.jaylarson

haha jay.. I'm not religious about cameras, I only use them. Didn't like Nikon because CCD sensor was worse in the sensitivity department, but now they jumped the CMOS ship.

I prefer Canon as I find them a little easier to use, but I have a mate that prefers Nikon because of the lenses. I guess it's a matter of personal preference and what you're used to.

- although some of what he says is truly retarded********
- Some of what you say makes me wonder if I'm retarded.ismith
- I'm pretty retarded, if that clears things up********
- what I mean is, he sometimes makes outrageous statements just to provoke controversy********
- yeah, he loves over-saturated imagesjaylarson
- those are INSANE********
- he draws conclusions about camera quality based on jpegs not saved at highest settings********
- sometimes it also looks like he uses out of focus images in his comparisons********
- but there's still a lot of useful stuff there********
- Thank you. Great site.flint
