my lady and i are planning a summer trip to the west coast. we're thinking of flying to san diego driving up to san francisco (or vice versa).
i'm compiling a list of possible destinations between the two. (san diego zoo, MOMA, etc).
I'm asking you, my fellow qbners (i miss the term NTer's) for suggestions.
thanx!

I've done that exact trip - really awesome drive. I second carmel / big sur / monterey for the scenery. I did it in 2 weeks, but longer would have been better, to spend a little more time in each place. I also went inland a little way to Palm Springs, which seemed quite a long excursion from the main route, but, as a Brit and not having seen much of the US at the time, was good to see / experience the desert-like aspect. And obviously SD and SF are great. Leave yourself plenty of time either end of the trip for both if you haven't visited before.

monterey aquarium rocks. if you're there at the right part of the season you can go whale watching. the sea otters almost make it worth the trip. try to catch the theater hooked up to the sub/divers that takes questions from the audience. cannery row is sort of touristy and the food there sucks. if I had to complain about one thing it would be that the food in the whole town sucks. upscale, downscale, in the middle, it all sucked.
- monterey aquarium is awesome, the kreisel tank is amazingstupidresponse
- i agree with the lot of it. For food, you might as well have lunch at the aquarium restaurant - it's not too bad.arthur

Wineries are a great way to spend some time. If you drive up, you can stop by Santa Ynez (http://www.winecountrygetaways... Otherwise, you can get to Napa easily from SF (http://www.napavalley.com/winer...

The coast road (Highway 1) leading up to Monterey is awesome... but watch out for rockfalls. I was having a lot of fun in a 350Z, came over a slight rise and had no time to avoid bunch of huge rocks, could only grit teeth and wait for the huge bang under the engine (luckily it was a rental car, which is impervious to any damage). Also, driving north is probably safer (less chance of plummeting off edge of cliff).

Might consider taking the train up from San Diego to LA. It is a nice ride and maybe a good idea unless you want to stop at Disneyland.

come to Lake Tahoe..... if you can. You will be treated like the royalty your wife will not admit you are.
