it's a great drive if you take the 1. it will take longer (obviously) than if you were to take the freeway(5+405) but so much more worth it. i would say continue up through san fran into the wine country if you have the time.
san luis obispo is a nice place to stop for lunch as is santa barbara.

not sure if anyone has said it yet, but go to the fishermans warf (sp?) in san fransisco. some cool old school shops and eateries. it's old time theme parky. you can see the golden gate bridge and look out to alcatraz. pretty cool the time i was there, but its one of those things you only have to see like once. have fun gruntttttttt!

Call it frisco always and forget ALL the stops between SD & Frisco and head to Cayucos, hidden just on the other side of Morrow Bay and right before Hearst Castle. Small town of 1500, one gas station, one bar, one breakfast joint and all if it a little slice of heaven...

While driving down 1, about 30 miles south of Carmel is Nepenthe. Great little restaurant just off the highway, high up the cliff above the ocean. Sit outside, great paninis.

May I suggest Japan Town in san francisco?
I thought it was one the best things there.
Make sure you visit Isobune for some delicious floating sushi.

I agree with those that say fly in to San Diego instead of SF...the Oakland airport is hell. Fly out of somewhere else on the return trip if you can.

Every plate has a color, you have a card in front of you at the bar that lists every sushi with its color on the side, you see what you like, you pick it up, you eat it and at the end of the meal, they see how many plates you have in front of you and which color are they.
