You've worked hard on a project proposal for a client the company has been after for a while, gone back and forth communicating and ironing all the details and finally sign the contract. You gotz the account! Yay! hi-five!
Now what? Do you send a 'thank you' email, postcard, send them a singing telegram? what?
What do you usually do to show clients they are important? People love to feel important and starting off in a good way is crucial...so, any suggestions?

Just cash the check as soon as possible and then end all contact.
Then on your portfolio, put up all the pieces you like - that they didn't want to go with complete with explanations as to how stupid they are.

I might be wrong, but letting your clients know they are appreciated might help business. whether they are small or large accounts. I'll have to come up with something...

OSFA, I know you like doing these things because you're a nice person but I find being nice a mistake.
It's probably because I'm jaded, but I think they'll think you're overly happy for their business in the future and take advantage of you later or something.
I'd say save these type of things for the holiday season, once a year as opposed to setting a precedent. Probably because sure enough in a few months they are going to drive you up a wall regardless of the bowling ball with a rose in it you got for them before.

Hey, you know what? If you're nice to them, they might be nice right back.
I say buy them a trophy for their lobby.

i agree with flav. you did your part (pitch), and they did theirs (accepted it). save the "thank you" bit for the holiday season.
although you see it as a nice thing, it might just seem like more "mail" to them.
good luck dude, and congrats on the new work!
