i think it would be awesome if some country bought a major web site/service like this and nationalized it. you know, really change the paradigm of economies...

"Getty’s shares have declined more than 47 percent in the last year. Its shares fell 10 percent in August, when the company lowered its full-year profit estimate because of competition from low-cost rivals."
Low cost rivals? You mean fairly priced rivals. Why would I pay like $80 for a non-exclusive, web quality image?

There should be a charity that gives 3rd world kids digital cameras. Then they could sell photos on iStock in exchange for food.

and then have various countries/religions/ethnic groups have a contest for the best pictures. they could win a free iPod!

@ ETW - exactly. Getty needs to rethink what they are doing if they want to survive. They will make back in volume what they lose in per sale profit many times over if they lower their prices to a sane level.

Interestingly, istock is now owned by Getty...and istock founder has a pretty high level position there I think.

Google buys it and cuts prices by 98%

i hope qbn buys it and puts up an extensive collection of all our idiotic image posts

i am curious to why everyone thinks there prices are too expensive.. isn't that something the client should be worrying about.. not designers? I worked as a editor at stock company awhile.. I also shoot for some.. what incentive do i have to license to stock when i get my statements from them saying that i made 50 dollar sale and i only get 50% commission.. are you making more money because stock photos are cheap? photoshoots cost a lot of money and time.. for designer to whine that it costs to much just sucks..

loaf, you've got a point, but when sales are down 30% in one year it's time to change strategy. I don't see why they can't offer a middle-tier service that would offer higher quality than istock for something like $10-20 per image. My guess is that for every image they sell at $140, they will sell many more than $140's worth at the lower price. Obviously, it's not that easy - I am sure they are trapped by their existing licensing agreements - but I think there would be a great market for high quality images priced at that level.

I hope it doesn't affect iStock, that baby is a nice lil cash generator for me.
- really? how much do you make off that? I have some shots and icons I was thinking of putting up there.

maybe sales are down because the imagery is too cheap and a 50 dollar RF images is not paying the bills.. :) is there really a market for high end sales? most of the cool companies.. nonstock,photonica.. all were swallowed and up and really do not exist anymore.. are clients really interested in paying for it if the designers think it is too high?
