I would definitely try to do some tougher looking logos for a cycle shop

no personal offense here leftwave, but you really need to study typography, typesetting, and letter forms more. this is a common situation in all the comps you post and i think you would really grow as a designer if you had this skill more refined. it would help you define your own design sensibility i think.
that said, being involved in the cycling world/industry/shops/wrench/etc for years and years, none of these marks feels remotely appropriate for a cycling shop. i actually disagree with the direction of making them more 'tough' as that is not really a quality of cycling. now, 'quality' and 'precision' certainly are, but 'tough' is one of quite a bit ago, not today.
try and define the tone reflective of the shops' personality with the face chosen; not all over the place as you are currently.
you will get it.

I agree with just about everything you said madrish, except the tougher part. I guess it would all depend on the shop itself, what they are into (single-speed, fixed gear, downhill, freeride, road, etc) but they were the guys that picked the name spinjunky. So just on knowing the name alone, I would guess they have a little bit of a rough edge. But I guess in reality only leftwave knows if they are togh, or more family cruiser style?

certainly, ron. but really outside of particular focus w/in cycling which clearly have demonstrable qualities unique to them, it is hard to find a shop (which is what this identity is focused solely on) that exemplifies any brand qualities and/or aesthetics outside of really precise, technical, or quality attributes. even pure DH shops (which i know well) really focus on this in a shop environment, IMO.
- true, and it does seem if it went only tough, they may pigeon-hole themselves from other markets.capn_ron
- yeah, exactly.madirish
- I don't agree. You will get a wider audience with a tougher look than something that looks feminine.dbloc
- not for everything, but a cycling shop for sure.dbloc
- it's ok to be incorrect, dbloc... ;)madirish
- I agree with that because this time you are.dbloc

- and just cause i am invested here, mind an example of a shop promoting this aesthetic well for us?madirish

You two (madrish & dbloc) quit horsing around. Get back to doing logos, whether they are tough or clean.
Either way, leftwave, keep working and you'll get something your proud of.

thanks everyone for the awesome feedback!
thanks madrish for the especially constructive criticism. i've been thinking about taking some design/typography courses at a local design school. for the most part, i'm self-taught and wish i had some of the schooling that you guys got...
anyone know of some good schools in the san diego area??
