You gotta respect a company that responds to one of the biggest screw-ups possible with "Um, Whoops".

you get what you pay for...

yeah I got stung twice. DH have been terrible over the past 6 months. Trouble is to move a lot of sites takes a lot of time etc etc so I'm holding out a bit longer!

This is why I never do automatic payments, especially online.

sweet baby jebus, i hadn't even began to think about the overall amount of money that was flying about when it happened. Having said that, the dollar is like monopoly money now so it's only £3.25m sterling.

"Last night a mistake was made that caused virtually every single DreamHost customer to be billed for a full year of hosting up until December 2008. This caused automated charges to be processed against these customer's credit card or other accounts from a few hundred dollars, to literally thousands of dollars. By their own admission, this was a $7.5M mistake. Seven and a half million dollars."

I was paid up until november 2008, and they just billed me for $120 USD today. not very happy.

You know, I have to be quite honest that I don't expect/want any sort of 'compensation' for something like this. Other than a few choice words way early in the morning, this didn't put me out in any sort of way. I'd probably be singing a different tune if I had an overdraft fee or two, but even then I'd just want them to pay the overdraft. Beyond that, whatever.

so far I've only have good experiences with dreamhost. I was already rewarded with two years after affiliation click-throughs, (could be also cashed-out in money).. they have already solved some major problems in my package and recovered a few mysql tables I dropped by mistake in a glimpse... So far this 'auto-billing' was the worst that happened since I'm a costumer(2004). I'll still trust them after all ...
problems like this will help them for sure in the future to be more aware of mistakes, and compensate costumers with better services and support.

I second Wolfboy's note on omj's post. Granted Dreamhost hasn't always been 100% perfect, but this is truly the only real problem I've ever had with them (and I've been with them since the days of Swanky).
Granted, it's a probably one of the worst things that could go wrong, but it's the only thing I can think of that's really gone wrong. I'm pissed that it happen, but thankfully I had the money to cover my ass.
Good bye auto pay!

I hear nothing but bad things from people who used Dreamhost. Nothing like this until now though.
- Really? This is the first fuck up I've experienced and I've been with them the best part of 4 years nowWolfboy
- Yeah, but I take it the same way as anything else. No one tells you about the good experience.ornj
- I haven't had any huge problems with them. I keep myself safe first of all anyway, and the price they have is good.Jaline

From the horse's mouth...
"- UPDATE Tue Jan 15 07:25:16 PST 2008 -Scripts are still running to correct the original problem. Last night, this guy ran a standard billing cycle to clean up stragglers from 2007. Unfortunately, the biller was ran for 2008 (December 31st, 2008 to be exact). This caused everyone to be billed as if today was 2008-12-31, wreaking the havoc that we are so sorry you had to be put through.
There is currently no ETA on when the “fix it” script will finish, but this post will not be resolved until it is. The script will reverse all erroneous charges and notify you via e-mail of the transaction reversal. If you receive an all clear e-mail, and are still having any problems with your account and/or charges, please contact support immediately.
Once again, we are all *extremely* sorry for the mishap. Thank you for your continued patience while we clean up our mess."

Likewise. Fortunately I wasn't billed because the credit card they had on file had since expired. So I went in and cancelled one of my two domains. Hopefully they manage to cut the charges in half before they try billing again.

i got the same thing as well.
- StratusGD0
Weird. I got the email saying that I was billed, but there's nothing on my bank statement or credit card. Guess they got it fixed already.
