doesnt the D40/D40x have limited controls/functionality?
D40/D40x < 400D
400D < D80
D80 < 40D
40D < D300
then it starts to get complicated.I shoot find nikon to be a bit more expensive generally but nikon does have a better flash system than canon. Canon has a slightly larger lens range and seems to be marginally better in the consumer range of cameras at high ISOs in regards to detail if you are a full on pixel peeper. I shoot canon because I just prefer the lenses. I would be happy shooting nikon too. Their cameras are kick ass.
Between the d40 and 400D, I would definately go the 400D.
