My friend is offering me a wicked deal on a G5 Power PC based mac he bought just before the intel switch. Should I go for it.. or is apple going to phase out support for Power PC in the foreseeable future?

oh hey yer the dude in vic i remember now.
how's it?
i'm on a G5 PPC dual2ghz. 2gbs ram atm and ok but i'm upping that to 4gb for leopard and improved CS3 performance.
with this $160 ram upgrade i foresee myself using this box another 2 years or so.
if teh price is worth 2-3 years use and you need a new box, go for it. apple towers should hopefully have seen a complete redesign by then and you'll be right on schedule to upgrade again.
imo.

I'm on a G5 2.3 Dual that I bought right when the Intels were coming out.
I bought the PPC because the G5 towers are incredibly stable, and they are the last in a long, long line of Mac PPC chipsets.
They are at the very top of the heap, whereas Apple is just getting started in the Intel arena. There are still bugs to be worked out over time.
The G5 tower is the apex of the PPC saga, and is a damn fine machine.
If you're getting a killa deal, then DO IT.

Apple ads usualy says
all we did yesterday is crap
now we are faster
we don't use our own processor anymore, now we are better
we used to like out own processors but we realised its crap

yeah, this is a dual 2.3 with 2 gb of ram, $1600 with external HD and monitor (albeit just a 19inch LCD not cinema) Seems as if thumbs are pointing up?

Thats a good deal go for it.
I'm as guilty as anyone of always worrying about getting a faster machine. My new job have given me an old quicksilver g4. After having an intel G5, there isn't the world of difference you expect.
Buy it then upgrade in a few years and put the money you saved towards something nice for yourself at christmas.
