The wife, kid (5yrs) and I are thinking of spending a few weeks in South America. We've never been. I know it's an enormous place, I'm just looking for somewhere to start.
Can anyone share any experiences and recommendations?
Our basic preferences:
-away from huge cities, smaller towns are good.
-near beaches a plus, not crucial
-outdoorsy stuff a plus, but nothing rigorous
-affordable, but not dangerousThanks.

If you are expanding to central america. I would recommend Costa Rica or Belize.

Never been there myself, but in your stead i'd with Chile or Argentina. Maybe Chile has more options. Argentina looks more european somehow.

Brazil has a lot of gorgeous beaches to go, if you want a non-dangerous and non-big-city, you should definitely look for any Northeast cities, like 'Natal' and 'Costa do Sauipe/Bahia'.
you can check'em out here:

Also, Buenos Aires is a good place to go, no beach there, but worth a visit too.
