High School graduation, right after the valedictorian speech and right before the walk-up-here-shake-hands-and-get... shit started the principal made a comment about how this year he's going to begin awarding "student of the year" awards for outstanding male and female students. So, first he calls out the female student, Tacie Purcell, and I'm thinking "yeah, Tacie's a nice girl, she deserves that award" and I turn around to continue talking about how it was hilarious that the valedictorian actually mentioned my name in his speech after I asked him to give me a shout out and next thing you know, someone is tapping me on the shoulder..."Greg, he just called you up there; you're the male student of the year". I was like "WTF". So I do that walk all the way from the back of the student seating up to the podium. I shake the principal's hand and he hands me a gift box. I got back to my seat and opened the box and it was a Bulova watch. I was in shock. An great award and an amazing gift. That night I wore it to a graduation party and broke that fucking thing while stairdiving. I got home and told my mom: "Mom, I've got bad luck with watches. I broke that Movado that you bought for me 2 years ago, lost my $150 Mickey Mouse watch the next year, and now I break this one". It was then that my mom said "Greg, you're just not graceful enough to be wearing a watch." I thought about it that night and decided I wouldn't wear a watch ever again... and I don't. All I use now is whatever cell phone I happen to own.
If you read all the way down here you are a very patient person.
- Perhaps too fucking patient, thank you very much.AndyRoss

auto-skip. sorry greg, even i can't read that rant.lvl_13 - i got my jerk-face game going tonight :\lvl_13
- Greg - I don't even know what this is...but I came across it when searching my name for something else. Talk about a blast from the past.
Taciethekerrclan - hmmm...that sucks! but I think you would look even more bad-ass with a nice watch.Jaline

(Nov 1 07, 22:07)Good read.
But I know what you are saying about expensive watches. I had a RAYMOND WEIL watch, it would only come out on special occasions because I lived in fear of fucking the thing up. In the end I just sold it on Ebay. I know wear no watch. Fill good to me.

i want a thin watch that doesn't snag on my shirt cuffs and that will fit under gloves in the winter. i shouldn't have to pay over $200.

I can't wear a watch, they stop working when I put them on. every one. weird.

Omega is just a bit too common. I personally have no interest in buying Omega, Rolex, or Tag.

(Nov 1 07, 19:29)totally agree, and it is purely my taste, nothing to be said for the awesome craftsmanship for those marks.
now, the one rolex i would buy however, is the limited edition (circa ~1990) oyster perpetual brushed titanium in matte.... all of it. no polishied bits anywhere save the rolex logomark on the face. everything was monchromatic/monotextured in reduced form brushed Ti.
that is a wonderful feeling timepiece.

yeah, there are some exceptions because you know they define classics and not about the ostentatious nature of some luxury watch.
i need to stop thinking about watches. it's a really expensive, endless hobby.

i know it. likewise.
i have a good friend here who has scored ore awesome, genuine, rare watchs off ebay...... makes me sick.
that and estate sales- that is where someone can fine their vintage Speedmaster gold for a song...

- jox0
Oh no, you misunderstood, I only talked to Mrs. Madirish about the watch - nothing more, I swear!
We only talk dirty on Tuesdays.

A nice watch can cost $100 or $100,000... all depends on you.
But once you get into watches, you start to check out what people are wearing. Surprising how many Rolex's are around.
But overall, the pre-owned watch market is fairly big and as long as you keep them in decent shape, they don't loose to much value.

I can't remember if I posted about this watch in this thread or not, but I got the watch I'd been totally craving from my girlfriend for Christmas. :) It arrived in late January because of a backorder, but opened it last week and was super happy!
Alessi Tic Watch by Piero Lissoni, 2000
I saw it in a recent GQ article about the best watches under $500 and talked about it constantly. It's available on the MOMA store.

I love my watch, it gets me laid, I have had it for about 10 years, still looks and works.
