getting ready to start a project at work and my boss wouldn't buy afterFX (which i have experience in), but we have final cut studio 2. I've never used motion. anyone have any good resources or books to get me started with this? it's for an animation sequence similar in style to the end credits of 300.

Check out http://motionographer.com/
Look to the left hand column at the far bottom under resources, maybe there's tutes with those sites listed.

ugh motion,
its handles like a microsoft program
(i think that says enough)
tell your boss to buy AE 6.5 on ebay than, supercheap and still centuries ahead of motion.

Tell him that not only AE is the industry standard, but its the tool you are experienced working with, meaning that you will work faster and will deliver better work with it.
On the other hand it doesn't hurt to learn a new app. Check the mini video tutorials on the apple site, you will learn the basics in less than 30min.

good luck!

thanks Meeklo. i've watched a few of them. we just got the software today. now i have 3 weeks to learn motion and build a 90 second animation. shouldn't be too bad. it doesn't sound like many people use the software though.

also your local applestore has free classes every month, (maybe weeks) check their calendar on the apple site.

I used to hate motion I used to say it was the single biggest program let down I have ever experienced :\
However I have been using it now for a couple of years and it is fantastic and very very intuitive, I now prefer to do things in motion to aftereffects (which I have been using for twice as long) I have absolutely changed my mind about this program and can recommend it to anyone who does motion graphics.
I would however say that having knowledge of both aftereffects and motion is a real bonus for me.

Chossy,
I am doing more and more work in FCP these days - was wondering if that's why you moved over from AE.
If so, how do you find the compatibility between the 2?
I love AE, but if I can find a good set of tools in Motion and move back and forth easily with FCP, I'll probably switch also. Thanks.

i guess its a matter of personal choice but i worked a bit in motion and it really handles bad and for difficult, advanced stuff (scripts and expressions) and combination with C4D i don't see solutions.
only plus its (kinda) reeltime
and the colour correction is pretty sweet.

the connection between final cut and motion is utterly amazing, seriously.
for example you don't need to render anything you simply create your gfx in motion and simply drag and drop the program file!!! into your bin in FCpro and slap it on your timeline and render it in final cut :D !!!! and the send to function is great highlight what tracks you would like to tinker with in motion and go to file send to motion and it pops it into a new compoition and maintains layer order and pulls audio through aswell then once you are done dodge back to final cut and it is on your itmeline waiting to get rendered :) very quick very good.
Like tank says though, I have in no way made a change or a move I still use AE for lots of stuff £d for example is better in AE but you can always get png sequences or alpha movies into motion. It compliments AE and a final cut suite perfectly.

Thanks Chosssy!
This seems to be exactly what I'm looking for since I've been finishing a lot of commercials for air lately. I'm gonna get the boss to upgrade us to FCS2 ASAP.
Most of my FX work (90% for commercials) is just compositing and text effects - so I'll stick with AE for 3D for now, but the back and forth between the 2 sounds sweet. Thanks again for the info and links.

Thanks Chossy! I am going to have to start digging in this week so i'll check out those links.
