The only main problem, apart fonts, is Adobe software. If you are switching to an Intel-based system be sure you are getting CS3. CS2 and Studio 8, apart photoshop, run crap on Intel ones.
About the browsers, you'll find safari and firefox. And if you are using boot camp you can even use Windows on that machine and so IE.BTW I always been a PC user, till started working here on a mac. Totally painless switch (apart i have to find a valid and handy replacement for charmap, but these are just really minor things)

A commercial replacement for charmap:
http://www.macility.com/products…Also, for a built-in alternative, open system prefs. and under International > Input Menu you can enable the Character Palette. Once checked, it'll be available from the menu bar.

I'm a long time PC user, but am also contemplating getting a MacBook, not to switch but the portability. I'd also be installing XP on it to dual boot. Main reason for doing this is to get Final Cut, Shake, and the portability factor.
Macs are purdy but PC does the job.

why don't you just buy a pc laptop for half the price of an mac?.

(Oct 3 07, 07:11)Macbooks are highly portable because they're only 13.3". I currently run a virtual machine running XP, but only for printing in my network and for using a program only available for a PC. For everything else I use OSX and it does the job. Very pretty, highly customizable interface, and somewhat customizable machine (only 2GB-3GB RAM though, but this is sufficient for lots of people).
I find it frustrating sometimes when things aren't available for the Mac (and I still can't figure out how to connect a damn printer and make it work on my network), but I have XP to fall back on in these cases.
The OSX interface looks A LOT better than any Windows interface, but it all comes down to which programs you want and how much money you have. The Mac does cost more when you compare features but it may be worth it. Again, it all depends on your exact use for the machine.
I had no problems moving my fonts over from a Western Digital external HD and then sorting them out in Linotype's FontExplorerX. I'm not sure how the music transfer works, but iTunes is a lot faster.

I forgot to mention that it totally sucks for the first few days / weeks if you have a lot of PC-only programs or if you just need to download things in general. It takes forever to find these replacements and then acquire them. The Mac programs look 50x better, as mentioned before, so it is worth it, but it's a pain.

ps, illo, flash etc?? they are the same. and more importantly they do the same shit.
am i missing your point?

Portability is a primary concern for sure.
And, don't know why - but I really don't like PC laptops. Seems like so many people I know have had issues, or they are fragile, or just so much larger than a Macbook.
I like that aspect that Macs pretty much work flawlessly. People I've talked to love that about their laptops.

That's a quality basis to buy a new a laptop ;)

(Oct 3 07, 07:40)They do the same things, you are correct, but they just look nicer on a Mac. But that isn't a big difference. I was actually referring to Mac-specific programs (there are lots out there, look in the "cool osx apps" thread). Should've been more specific.

(Oct 3 07, 07:53)ahh, okay. makes sense. not sure if i totally agree with you (lots of nice little apps for pc as well) but whatever...
like i said before, i could really give a shit if i am working on a mac or pc. it's all just a tool. some work better done on one machine, other work better done on another. :)
- Jaline0
I agree with you for the most part, but I do like pretty things ;)
Of course there are nice apps for the PC (still though...I doubt the interface is as bright and colourful as a Mac app usually is, but that is partly the system itself) and that's why I have XP.
- mg330
Jaline - is it easy to install both the Mac OS and WinXP?
I bought XP earlier this year in anticipation of building a new computer, but have still not built one.
How do you switch between the two? Choose at startup?
