^ Not that I use my laptop to take notes for every class. Only the ones that have too many things for me to physically write down. And I don't bring it to discussion groups, for obvious reasons.

Did you mean the notes you put in the "Enter response:" box Jaline?
- Concrete0
Jaline, nobody cares.

some school require you to BUY a mac laptop at a discount
that could be the pic of from that school / class
- BonSeff0
seems lile it would be more difficult to listen to a lecture with a bunch of a-holes typing away all around you
- Witt0
hard to believe you type faster than you write, Jaline.
Maybe the interesting part using a laptop is that you don't have to copy it later - although that part of learning (copying scribbled notes to another place) is usually the most productive, because you're then organizing it mentally and reviewing the subject at hand.

Here's the article for anyone who cares...

i prefer writing notes at any given point.
when you are typing the whole thing seems generic and focused on taking dictation.
when you write, you can add side notes. also when you are writing, you are doing physical motion where you tend to remember more as you write.

Long post, as usual:
Nah, raf, those lecture notes would be even less understood by the majority of people here compared to my posts.
Bonseff, if you're keyboard is *that* noisy...yeah, it's annoying. But I haven't been bothered by this too much.
Concrete, I'm using a real-life example that is relevant to this conversation.
I'm not saying that the situation in the picture is great though. I already dislike those people and I have no idea who they are.
Witt, I learn by re-writing /typing things rather than by reading, you're correct. Especially since I'm a visual learner and I remember things as they are presented on a piece of paper. However, I don't want to worry about getting everything down and my hand getting tired during that actual lecture (and I consider myself to have a higher tolerance for the pain that comes with writing a lot of things). I can worry about specific words and re-formulating things when I go over the notes at a more relevant time (like when a test is coming up).
I like mixing it up, which is why I use paper for some classes and a laptop for others.
People learn differently. I doubt all the people in that picture learn by just taking notes on a laptop.

i create my grocery list on my laptop and take that to the supermarket with me.
i'm somebody.
when my wife gets home i turn it on and record what's she's saying, so later when i'm done playing halo i can go back and review what she said and take notes for the next morning when i am quizzed on the conversation.
i'm smart.
i walk my laptop in the dog park, and drop an old floppy from it signifying it has taken a shit. then i pick up said shit with a ziplock freezer bag over my hand.
that's how i roll.
really, who gives a damn if these kids use a laptop or not to take notes. half these kids are surfing anyways or im-ing each other to find out who is going to get their older sibling to buy them beer this weekend. who gives a shit.

(Oct 2 07, 08:16)true on all counts, especially the point about being able to take side notes and making diagrams when writing things down rather than typing (you can still get a program to do this, I'm sure, but it wouldn't be as effective).
However, what's so horrible about getting everything the professor says and then still having time to listen to the prof elaborate the idea further (while everyone else is still madly writing away in their notebooks)?

You know what most of you sound like?

I think the larger issue is the disposal income and/or debt these youngsters [or their parents] have incurred... and why on earth are they using Macs vs a cheaper PC for journalism class...?
Back in my day, by the time I paid for tuition, my mac, rent, supplies, etc, I could barely afford to eat...

or do drugs...

totally, I went the PC route while studying graphics for christ sakes I was so skint.
