I think the larger issue is the disposal income and/or debt these youngsters [or their parents] have incurred... and why on earth are they using Macs vs a cheaper PC for journalism class...?
Back in my day, by the time I paid for tuition, my mac, rent, supplies, etc, I could barely afford to eat...

My school used strictly Macs for the design program, so why would anyone use anything else?
Now for the 3-d program they used PCs, but I heard they recently switched.

yea i agree writing notes by hands has always helped me much more. i graduate in december and i have never used a laptop for notes. i've taken classes with 5-6 pages of notes and whatnot and i cant imagine doing it on a laptop...opening up notepad or word and then typing away...blah.

It depends. I have one professor that says way too many things at one time. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I like knowing everything the prof is saying and having that in the back of my mind later on when I study. A lot of profs like it when you remember very specific things.

a. these Macs aren't supplied by the school
b. it's not a program that requires a graphics machine
c. the blind brand adoption by a class of students who could possibly your nations future in terms of social vanguards, should leave you somewhat chapfallen

Any smart student would buy a mac. Everything you need ready to go on purchase. Plus, why should a forest have to die for notes they will never read?

forest have to die??? ever heard of recycled paper?

I doubt any programs that a laptop user would need in a Journalism class would have updated Mac versions. It could be true, but it seems unlikely.
One of my Communication Research programs uses a program that is only available on Windows right now.

(Oct 2 07, 09:27)snuggles does have a point. Many of these students supposedly don't have the money to do anything, yet can buy a Mac. And they ARE more expensive when compared to PCs in the same range. While function and style are important, when you're a student sometimes you do have to go for the cheaper one that requires more effort upon the user to understand.
