so i am getting dark gradients on the corners
and way too much lensing (curves on the pics)

You can get rid of the vignetting by stopping down. Try shooting at f/5.6 or f/8.

also at what focal length does it occur?
normally this problem occurs if your zoomed all the way out or in.

You don't have a UV filter or anything on that lens, do you? that could be causing the vignetting also.

On my wide angle lens, my UV protector was causing vignetting. I was upset at first, but now I use it to my advantage. Causes less post production.

if you are racked all the way out or all the way in and shooting with the lowest fstop, you are gonna get distortion and vignetting....do what others have said and shoot at 5.6 or 8 without the lens totally out or in. should help. the partial frame sensor on the d80 is not helping you.
