He pretty much got slammed.

Why is everyone so fucking concerned with money? It's not everything you know. And no I wouldn't take the bags of money. Tell me this...
What's more important to you:
A. Staying true to what you believe
B. Sacrificing your beliefs for a bag of cashThing is he built his brand on the belief that he was underground and anti-establishment ... which is what people bought into. Do you think he's still underground? What has he done lately that says he's still anti-establishment? The ironic part about this whole thing is that now all the people I've seen wearing his crap are the same douchebags you'd see driving around in big ass trucks ... so, basically, dudes who are trying to fit in...if that isn't 'people obeying the calls of establishment' then please please tell me what is.

WeeklyDrop 40:
Erik Brunetti of FUCT (2007 07 17)
- Meeklo0
Do you think he's still underground?
no, he stop being underground the very day you me and everyone that was not on his circle of very close friends knew about him.
What has he done lately that says he's still anti establishment?
You may just answered your own question there, NADA.
I doubt you can be anti establishment from the moment people recognize you as a brand. or wear your slogan on a tshirt, right?I guess my idea of anti-establishement has nothing to do with a clothing company, or any brand..
Lets just start to say that you can be anti establishment if you dont live under a bridge.. ;)

(Sep 7 07, 14:40)sorry I ment to say, can't

So you're logic is that the minute someone outside your circle of friends knows about you then you can no longer be considered underground?
And that selling your clothing through smaller less accessible outlets is the same as selling your clothing at WalMart?
I guess I think that's extremely restrictive of the terms 'underground' and 'sellout.'
When I asked if he had done anything lately that says that he's still anti-establishment...the way I should have phrased it is 'Has he done anything lately that says he isn't anti-establishment anymore?' - to that I would point to his signature on big box corporate retailers.
It's a good discussion. I just feel that if you build your brand on a certain ideal, then its harmful to your brand when you discard that ideal for the dollar bill. Makes it less about art and expression and more about large bank accounts.
- horton0
Meeklo my references to FUCT etc was only to suggest that you can be succesfull without selling to Walmart.
not comparing Obey to these other brands in any other way.

yes! is it not that anymore?
the philosophy behind the "undeground" term, has now changed to "it was good when I knew about it and you didn't, now it sucks"And that selling your clothing through smaller less accessible outlets is the same as selling your clothing at WalMart?
not exactly.
i think establishment represents business and echange of money. If you want to be antiestablishent in the true sense, you can't be selling any sort of product anywhere to make a profit, if you do, then my friend you are establishment. correct?I guess I think that's extremely restrictive of the terms 'underground' and 'sellout.'
yes, it is, I think nowadays being undergorund or a sellout depend on who you talk to and their experiences with the subject in question.
"I knew about it before you" = undeground.
"Now that you know about it" = sell out.
by saying that, you are positioning yourself in the "cool spot" away from the others that are not as cool as you. Wich is the same that "the tool driving a pick up truck with an obey t-shirt is doing" (In essence at least) correct?
It's a good discussion. I just feel that if you build your brand on a certain ideal, then its harmful to your brand when you discard that ideal for the dollar bill.
It is a good discussion, but you can't build a brand on anti establishment because a brand represents establishment in the first place, yes? no? am I alone on this?
Makes it less about art and expression and more about large bank accounts.
We agree there, but.
Why is it ok to sell "antiestablishment" for 1000 people, but its wrong to do it for 5000? you are either way established your self, cashing in on your "art"see my point?
- tommyo0
Yeah I definitely do see your point(s). We're just both on opposite sides of this argument and that's not a bad thing. It's what keeps living interesting.
Agree to disagree?
