i lived in portland for a few years and live in seattle now, and i think portland is merely a stepping stone to seattle. Everything cool that is in Portland, is in Seattle times 2. more art, music, lounges, trees, mountains, rain..everything. I really like seattle but the rain gets to me once in a while. No sales tax in Oregon though, so if youre smart you get a license in Oregon and then move to seattle because washington will wave sales tax if you show your oregon id. Pretty cool. Seattle has my vote.

portland. it's like seattle without the pretension.

weird how Portland is now the hottest spot in the country. I personally love seattle and have only spent a few days in portland so I dont know if I have enough knowledge to make a fair judgement.
I was in seattle last week and it seemed most of my hipster artist and musician friends are all making the move to portland.

admittedly, i haven't been to either of those places. or stepped outside my apartment in days.

i have no opinion on the subject but i will pop in to this thread to ask... Anzelina, how did your trip through the south go? did you make it to Asheville?

Portland is way more pretentious than Seattle. Hipster kids on every corner. There are a lot in Seattle too, but they seem nicer, not as big a stick up their butt.

You get better weed in portland.

then i vote for seattle.
- emokid0
that was before reading spendogg's comment. now i'm torn.

Both are nice, but my scale tips Portlands way, for oh so many reasons.

the whole hipster thing is played out now, they just don't realize how stupid they look and act.

in terms of design jobs/firms, surely seattle has more opportunities?

grunttt! I did get to stop in Asheville for a few hot minutes one morning. We were on the way from the Smokies to Virginia, and pretty greasy from lack of showers at our campgrounds. But, I really liked Asheville! It's cute, but laid back. I went to a great little bakery and got a vegan spicecake. I'm not even vegan but it was DELICIOUS. Then went to a cute shop called LOFT. Overall Asheville experience was A+!

Thanks guys. I'm wanting to leave NY for something different. Those two cities are topping my list. Any insight on cost of living vs. salary in those cities? Which city has a better music scene?

Yeah, the job market is small but potent, but I give PDX the edge for proximity to outdoor lifestyle.
Mt. Hood is in your backyard for Christ sake so snowboarding can be an after work thing (they have night skiing at Meadows, and I prefer it to daylight), and if you like to windsurf or Kite Board (or want to learn), Hood River is about an hour from the city, and the capitol in this country for said sports (the gorge and wind are good pals...) as well as being a mecca for hiking, mountain bike riding and general get close to nature time.
Regardless, they both destroy my present location, Satan's Anus, AKA Saint Louis.
