SKT - I spent 3 weeks in Croatia two weeks ago, beautiful place. You should definitely check out Dubrovnik, and the islands of Hvar and Korcula. Book yourself a nice little apartment in the town of Hvar, and hire a boat during the day and explore the islands. It's paradise. If you head to Markaska be sure to check out Deep Bar, which is a cool club inside a big cave on the cliffside!

Sounds good RIZ, how did you go about hiring a boat? I mean, do you have to hire a captain too or can you just head off out to sea by yourself?

(Aug 24 07, 06:43)"Did you hire yours from Hvar? Looks like i might be spending a couple of days there now after all...

skt - when you head down to the main marina area of Hvar, there are lots of boats you can hire out for the day. They seat about 6 people, and cost about £35 for the day. You don't need a permit, or skipper for them, you just jump on board and motor out to one of the islands just offshore. Theres a lovely island named Parmezana abut an hour away, with a great little bar on the rocks run by an Australian guy. It's one of the most idyllic places I've ever been to in my life. Just ask one of the guys who hire out the boats - they'll point you in the right direction! Also be sure to take the boat tour out the Blue Caves, quite an amazing place.

cheers RIZ, sounds quality. will be sure to do that.

dittp everything Riz said.
i was there on a weeks sailing trip about 4 weeks ago with 12 friends.highlights for me:
Hvar : a bar called Carpe Diem, plus the place is just beautiful.Dubrovnick : do the walk around the wall in the late afternoon just before the sun sets...perfect. and a bar called east west. (avoid the hospital there....its primitive)
Makoska: that deep bar is fun
Korcula: theres a bar up in a tower that you have to climb a ladder to get to with amazing views. they hoist your cocktails up on a pulley.
Mljet: Nice quiet place to chill and swim
went to a few other paces like Split, Milna and somewhere else. We anchored and swam Near Bol, which is that beach you had the photo of...real nice.
Hot tip. Definately hire a boat look out for sea urchins.
have fun!

Amazing... did a lot of the things suggested, hiring a boat in hvar and going off round the islands was probably the highlight of the trip. Absolutely beautiful country.
And yeah, going skinny dipping at 2 in the morning makes it a little hard to look out for urchins. I managed to get both my feet. Awesome.
Anyway, i'm away for a proper English breakfast.

good times.
those things must've been fun to pull out at 2am!
oh yeh. too late tip....nowhere there does breakfast! haha.

Glad to hear you had a great time! Did you find the little island bar run an Australian guy?

My wife is Croatian and I've been there a few times.
If you just want beautiful beaches/ coastal towns packed with tourists then stay on the left side, but if i was you I would go inland and look for a few small villages to get a real sense of Croatia.
Depends what you are after but if it's history then the further west you go the further into the recent history you get.
Even though the war was over 10 years ago, they still have houses riddled with bullet/ bomb holes and destroyed buildings.
The forests are wild and the hills are alive!
- rafalski0
ten years... WW2 bombs are still being dug out across Europe and I know buildings with bullet holes from that era.
they're popular amongst film location scouts though!
