My wife is Croatian and I've been there a few times.
If you just want beautiful beaches/ coastal towns packed with tourists then stay on the left side, but if i was you I would go inland and look for a few small villages to get a real sense of Croatia.
Depends what you are after but if it's history then the further west you go the further into the recent history you get.
Even though the war was over 10 years ago, they still have houses riddled with bullet/ bomb holes and destroyed buildings.
The forests are wild and the hills are alive!
