I might be moving to Portland. Are there many jobs out there? Will it be hard to pick up a decent FT that does good work. Links would be cool to.
Thanks

Portland OR where?!

Portland Oregon, not sure. Me and the missy are just thinking about the big move from the east to the west. We know a few people out there and they say they love it. We are planning to visit in like 3 months. But are not really familiar with the areas yet. that will be a later post ;)

good place, good people, lots of rain. great cuisine, interesting design scene and a low-fi vibe to the whole city.
arthur can chime in with more for sure- he lives there.

Cinco Design
Plazm
WeidenKennedy
Sandstrom Design
Nemo Designto name a few. Pretty cool place to live, left Portland for Seattle recently. I like Seattle a lot more. A little rainier but way more in the way of design and art.

technically Nike is in Beaverton, Oregon

I love Portland. Coming from SF and LA, it was the best move I've made. Lovely city, perfect size for what I want, easy to get away...
I'm freelance, have a couple of local clients, most are in NYC, so don't have a very good feel for the design market here.

I fancied a move there for a little while and stopped when I couldn't find any job openings, best of luck because I too love Portland.
If I had to compare it to an east coast city I'd call it a little Boston but its not even really close to that.

portland is a beautiful city. much like seattle, only a little more laid back. its still developing as far as culture and art, but a lot of really cool stuff comes from there. i like it.

A lot of design companies in Portland, especially considering the size. Larger outfits are beginning to open satellite offices here as well (e.g. R/GA)
Even still, i think design jobs are hard to come by. After all, every one and their mom in this town is a "designer". With that said, if you have a good book then you're sure to get in the door and at the very least meet some folks.
I recommend checking in with a few of the placement companies to get a sense of what's out there:
52 Limited and Filter Talent are some good groups that have a pulse on the local market. Even if they don't place you, it's good to meet with someone there and have a chat. Their doors are open.

Portland's cool. Massive amounts of people moving here primarily from Cali have caused rents to skyrocket and traffic to suck.
Many of the things that were once cool and unique about Portland have been displaced by high rent establishments and condos. The broke creatives who "Made Portland Weird" can no longer afford to live here and are being systematically replaced by bay area yuppies.
Pretty much turning into a mini-San Francisco and only getting worse with overdevelopment.
Glad I bought a house a few years back, should be able to sell it for a lot whenever I move on. Guess that's just how it goes.
If you're a decent designer or good at whatever you do you should be able to find work somewhere.
Good food & bountiful titty bars though.

The city feels way more alive than it did in the 90s.wagshaft - ^True. I try not to confuse progress with loss of "flavor", but it does suck to see friends not able to afford to live here anymore. And new housing goingBK
