In Nashville, make it a point to check out Hatch Show Print shop downtown. It's a wood-type printer's heaven.
Also, don't forget the big old fake Parthenon (worth seeing at least to know what NOT to do when mimicing Greek architecture).
Then take in a southern breakfast at the world-famous Loveless Cafe just to the southwest of the city. Best biscuits ever.
Google all of it to find out more.

yes definitely hatch show. we did some work with them last year. great shop. durham: just a little southern hood charm! downtown durham is on the rise. old tobacco warehouses. check The Federal for drinks. in chapel hill, across the street from cat's cradle, try Milltown for food and drink.

I have to go back to Nashville just because Hatch was closed when I was there.

Austin and San Antonio TX are not in the "deep south."
Correct yourself.

If I have to venture south of the Mason-Dixon line, I try to stay in major cities only, haha.

Thanks some more!
Bliz, I realize Austin is not deep south, but I'll have to drive through it to get there. Does that qualify?

So I finally got around to making a video of the trip, here's the link for any of you stuck at work today, or otherwise trying to kill time.
And yes, I realize some of the stops aren't the "Dirty South" but try telling that to my roommate.

I'm not too keen on the deep south. I have to be honest, I feel pretty helpless and depressed when I get there. I prefer the places with sugar coating like NOLA and Orlando. Places like Hattiesburg, MS and Americus, GA (even though I met nice people there) just creep me out. No thanks, I'll stay West and live with people who keep it to themselves.
On a lighter note, hope you had a good time anz!

this video is awesome.

Point, I went on the trip to see if the south is a place I'd like to move. Agree with you though, although most of the people I met were so nice and hospitable, I could never do it. Way to weird.

rural anywhere is weird, the south is particularly odd though, I know what you mean.
