I'm going to visit the "Deep South" with a friend this month. We'll be gone on a two-week roadtrip.
Stops are:
Raleigh, NC
Asheville, NC
New Orleans, LA
Austin, TX
San Antonio, TX (maybe)
Memphis, TN
Nashville, TN
Louisville, KY
Back to New York! We've got friends to stay with in Raleigh and Austin. The rest of the trip is an open book. Or, an open road? We'll bring camping gear with us so we can pitch tent wherever need be. Does anyone know of some good camp sites in any of the places we will be hitting? Or good hostels?
Also, recommendations for what to do in each of those cities would be awesome. Does anyone know where I can find a live music site for any of those cities? I know I can use pollstar.com, but I'm looking more for something a la New York's 'OhMyRockness'.
Also, of course, if any of you out there work in fun studios and wouldn't mind a visit, I'd like to stop by. I'm interested in seeing what kind of job prospects the south might have for me.
Thanks guys!

No Charleston or Savannah? You're missing out, but it sounds like a fun trip - I'm just partial because that's where I'm from :)
Asheville is a great town. Lots of great bars and restaurants.
Eat as many types of BBQ as you can possibly find during your journey. They will be different styles at pretty much every place you stop.

I just went on a dirty south family trip. St Louis to Nashville to Chattanooga to Louisville. Nashville seems like a really nice city. I'd like to spend more time there. Chattanooga has some cool attractions too. I love the Hunter American Art Museum there:

grunttt!
We'll be getting to Asheville sometime around the 20th (Monday). Not sure how long we plan to stay there, probably no more than two days. Maybe we can meet you and yours for a few hours.
Thanks for the link about the music schedule.
Thanks others for helpful tips. Hopefully I can check out Hunter Museum!

I'd bring a gun if I had the slightest idea where to get one.

raleigh also has durham and chapel hill within 25 miles. for live music try cat's cradle in chapel hill/carrboro. also, local 506, durham theatre, lincoln theatre, disco rodeo. great mexican food cosmic cantina, carr burrito. raleigh times has great drinks. come prepared for some humidity. cheers.

that sucks. finally an opportunity to meet a fellow NTer! if your dates happen to change or even if you manage to get into town a day early, let me know. have fun!
- anzelina0
I will let you know. I suppose there is a chance we get into Asheville Sunday night.

Royal, great tips, thanks!

chapel hill/carboro is a great stop. Durham always scared me though. One block, real nice, next block, the hood, next block nice, next block crack houses...
- mrdobolina0
grunttt wishes it was just all the hood and crack houses.

new orleans will be the most original of all those towns by far.
fun. unique. culture-heavy.austin (which is not DEEP SOUTH btw) and asheville will be your hipper spots outside of new orleans...
louisville has got a great public skate park.

Thanks some more!
Bliz, I realize Austin is not deep south, but I'll have to drive through it to get there. Does that qualify?
