Once again debating the specs of a new computer, plan on building one within the next month.
Current comp was built in 2003:
Intel Celeron 2.0 GhZ, Win2K, 1 GB memory.New ones I'm looking at are either Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 or AMD 64 Athlon X2 5400, both are roughly the same in several benchmark tests.
New comp will be used just for design related software and music editing (eventually w/midi stuff and whatnot)
So, considering my current computer, does it make sense to get something as high-end as I'm thinking of, or could I do alright in comparison to current comp with something a little lower in speed?
Merci!
BTW - here's a chart I'm going by:

the higher-end, the better in the long run. ideally, you should be thinking quad-core.

Get a Mac.
Sorry.
Too easy.

No mac.
MacDonalds would be good right now though.

yeah, go quad-core. for a hundred more bucks, you could get this:

A little cheaper here Chief:

and don't skimp on RAM
4GB+ is where it's at, especially if you're going to be running Vista

I've got a E6400 and E6420 - love both of them. Get the 6420 over the 6400, it's not much difference in $$$ and has the 4mb cache vs the 2mb.
But you'll love it.
Also if you can get the quad, i would do it, just for future use. the core 2 duo really is nice though, i used to be an AMD guy

only 2.4 ghz? you'll be glad you had more if you get more.

easily overclocked to 2.8-3.2 with no problems

And it isn't about clock speeds anymore, at least it's not that as important. It's about how many operations can be performed within in clock cycle that counts now.
I'd go with the quad core if you had the cash to spare, if not, the core 2 duo are pretty sweet. I recommend only going AMD if you're really strapped for cash and need something immediately.

intel is more overclockable these days? sweet!
