bit of a tourist hole... use it as a base station to do more interesting overnight trips to atlas mountain villages etc.
or just keep traveling south.

sure, the mountains sound great. Some v cheap hols, 5* etc to M though, looks ok

or if you want an easily accesible old city medina experience, i much prefered Fez.

hmm, fez does look better, much more expensive though - kinda limited financially!

(May 25 07, 13:38)depends on how you wanna travel i guess.. and what you're up for. everywhere i stayed in morocco was easily under $15/ night.
if you're adventurous i'd recommend just showing up and finding small old city hotels rather than searching accomodations online.

yeah I guess, it's a surprise for our first anniversary though, so maybe that'd be too much of a surprise?! If it were just me then yeah...
- horton0
ahh yeah anniversary - ok gotcha now. don't let my banter spoil, marakesh will be fun
+ make sure to go to a real hamman/ public hot bath. SUPER intimidating at first but the people will be warm and friendly inside. you won't regret it.
+ don't let anyone fool you.. climbing mt toubkal is a realllllly big trek. make sure you're fully prepared.

thanks for the advice - any thing we should do while there?

(May 25 07, 13:55)+ drink loads of fresh mint tea
+ spend a day carpet shopping even if you do not intend to buy one.
+ hit the medina square at night when street performers come out
+ pass on the market fresh OJ
+ if you can escape for a couple days take a day bus ride over the tizi'n'ticha pass (stunning and frightning mountain roads) and make way to the todras gorge.
over'n'out

skip the urge to see casablanca, the mosque is rad but that's about it:

We're thinking of going later this year - has anyone been recently and has any tips for nice places to eat, things to see, places to stay or visit?
Thanks!

We took the overnight train to Marrakech from Tangier. Pretty cool experience. Marrakech itself was a little sketchy in my opinion. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Kids are trained to try and con you out of money. They will ask if you need directions and then act like they are leading you there. Next thing you know you end up in a rug show or tannery not anywhere near where you want to be. Even if you say you don;t need directions, they will walk in front of you acting like they are leading you and then ask for money when you get there. I almost got into a fight a few times because I didn't give them money. It's was really an experince, but I probably wouldn't go back.

The craziest experience was taking a cab through the Medina. The roads are so skinny with people/motorcycle/donkeys and everything else all over the place and they haul ass through there. It was seriously nuts.

don't talk to vendors in the Suks unless you plan to buy, they get pissed when you dont. leather is dirt cheap and not get conned into buying a rug, you have to haul it back with you.
- haha, I remember Tangiers being a bit like this when I visited as a kid - my folks were hella pissed off with the entire experience :)detritus

thread is almost 10 fucking years old. A friend of mine just came back from Marrakech. Pretty cheap. 1500 euro all inclusive wife and 2 kids, and nice weather of course..

We stayed here.
http://www.riadvertmarrakech.com…Really cool place to stay. super nice people. It's a little hard to find though because it's in the middle of the Medina. Every street looks the same in the Medina. You can really only tell where you are by the doors.
here are some photos from the trip.
