I live in San Jose. Mountain View is on my short list of places I'd move to in the Bay Area.

great rollercoasters

mountain view is pretty much in between san jose and palo alto, so if your considering a move in this direction, you can move pretty much anywhere in the bay area. i know plenty of people who live in san francisco and work in mountain view if your up for a 40 minute drive or don't mind taking caltrain.

used to live in Los Gatos.

I grew up right next to it. It's super duper expensive.
My mom-in-law is there now. She bought a tiny duplex last year for 1.4m.

(May 22 07, 17:32)does Bart not go out that way? is caltrain a regular train or some sort of lightrail?
- arthur0
Last I heard, something with BART was in the works but I don't know what stage it's at - I'm sure years down the line.
Caltrain is the way to go. I know the Mountain View stop well. Takes you right to SoMa.

hlyfck!
It looks like a pretty small town...but nice...
- arthur0
There aren't really "small towns" on the peninsula anymore. They all kind of merge together. it's sometimes hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.
Don't look for any bargains if you're homeshopping. This is the land of the $1m teardowns, I kid you not.

Just trying to find a little out about the area...there are some good companies out that way...
- ninjasavant0
Light Rail goes to San Jose/Campbell and Caltrain goes to SF. No BART to speak of in the Peninsula/South Bay and I wouldn't hold my breath.
Yeah its expensive, just the same as the whole Bay Area. There's not a house anywhere you can buy for less than $450,000 anywhere. Condos start in the $2-300,000s. That said, if you have the means, Mt View is a very nice place to visit and like I said I wouldn't mind living there myself.

i grew up right there. my parents still live there.
"few good companies there..."
- um yeah, you could say that. ;)"1million for a tear down..."
- spot on. i would say more, honestly for something you would really want. the housing market in the Bay Area is probably unbelievable to most people until they look at it/numbers. IMO, it outs 99.99% of the world to shame for it's outrageous prices."seems like a nice town..."
- HAHAHA. you need to go there nic. it is certainly a nice town, but it is also one of the *most* expensive places to live on earth. renting or owning property aside, cost of things are nuts. like arthur said, there really are no 'towns' anymore- all are quite big and much bigger than they appear at first. they also all blend together given the county/city layouts and geography so it is hard to tell them apart. you can, but it is becuase of the cars parked on the street, not the realestate values... ;)hell, just by a little bungalow in Woodside and call it a day. ;)

i think people over-play how expensive the bay area is. it is expensive, but many people live here without having to resort to food stamps. i met someone who just moved to san francisco from new york, and he said that, although his rent was more than it was in new york, he was amazed at how much square footage he's getting. as far as buying, it really depends on location. i'm looking into a 1200 sq foot loft in downtown san jose for about $670k. yes, that's on the expensive side, but my cousin just spent that much on a 2 bedroom house in south san jose, so it really depends on where you're looking. on the other hand, the housing market in the bay area is still pretty strong. the only houses that have lost value are the 3mil homes and above since the demand for those homes have dropped drastically since the bubble burst.
