i think people over-play how expensive the bay area is. it is expensive, but many people live here without having to resort to food stamps. i met someone who just moved to san francisco from new york, and he said that, although his rent was more than it was in new york, he was amazed at how much square footage he's getting. as far as buying, it really depends on location. i'm looking into a 1200 sq foot loft in downtown san jose for about $670k. yes, that's on the expensive side, but my cousin just spent that much on a 2 bedroom house in south san jose, so it really depends on where you're looking. on the other hand, the housing market in the bay area is still pretty strong. the only houses that have lost value are the 3mil homes and above since the demand for those homes have dropped drastically since the bubble burst.
