"These engines are not fragile per se, they've just been driven by people who don't know how to properly cool down the turbos after a hard drive."
could not agree more. this is the #1 reason why we see SO many 996tt's one the sale block after little use- silly owners drive them like a raped taxi for months the scoff at the idea of having to spend $20k to rebuild everything they ruined by just putting it in that car lot and walking away.
moe-rons.

actually jox, i did notice that it ran slightly rough at idle.
i always let my cars cool down after some "spirited" driving. turbo or no turbo.
the funny thing is that I've been babying the S4 and i've been having these problems while my previous cars, MK4 Golf 1.8t, MK4 GTi VR6 and Audi TT 225 had no problems.

isn't the 2.7t two KO3's?
i thought the V8 would be reliable. it's so natural.

(Aug 14 07, 04:00)If I was you mate I would invest in a VAG COM cable. I did last year and It has paid for itself already, and more.
- jox0
You heard the man, vwsung - go out and get a VAG-COM! Chop-chop!

(Aug 14 07, 05:12)how exactly do you cool down turbos? just drive it slow for 15 mins?

(Aug 14 07, 10:36)Pretty much. Sans boost for a few minutes. If everyone did that, there wouldn't be any turbos that needed replacement...

additionally, there are procedures for certain VAG cars that allow for the car to be sat idle for a period of time where the after-run pump comes on, which is desired.
i know the C4-chassis 20vt cars have this option for cool-down, for example. ;)

i usually let it run in the garage with the door open for a minute or two before shutting down.
- jox0
Actually, that doesn't help nearly as much as driving slowly for a few minutes, as it's the air going in that cools the turbos down.
- madirish0
yeah, those B5, B6, B7 S4s do not have secondary pumps; ambient air from a garage is not helping them any as they are basically intaking the exaust from the same system.
drive it around sans boost.

the car is at the dealer right now. i'm wondering if my car does become a lemon, what would the dealer do? do they get me a new S4? give me my money back? get me another used car of equal value?
