jox, help! my S4's ESP light won't turn off and CEL is on and flashes sometimes.
- jox0
Whoa, could be anything dude. Tow it to whoever has a VAG-COM.
Any recent mods? It can sometimes throw CELs on certain spark plugs, exhausts or filters...
- vwsung18t0
no mods. CEL was on a couple of weeks ago and the dealer replaced the O2 sensor. i've heard nightmare stories of people bringing their S4 back every month. I think i'm falling into that category.
- jox0
I really shouldn't speculate because it could be just about anything at this point - but if I had to guess, I would say probably radiator, one of the two coolant sensors or, god forbid, the cats...
Or maybe your new exhaust - CEL doesn't necessarily light up right away.
Ask on an Audi board or something if someone could swing by with a VAG-COM, I'd be surprised if one in our brotherhood couldn't lend a helping hand.
A brotherhood I am part of again as of noon today by the way! Feels good to be back in an S.

sung- i too would want ot see codes thrown, but it could be a number of things. my gut tells me it is probably an 'old' code that was not dealt with or is something recurring that is just tough to trace... but a simple fix in the end.
O2 sensor jumps to mind right away, but if so, it is probably only becuase of the hotter/richer gases coming over it; causing it to be fouled and read incorrectly.
from that, i would think it could possibly be a rich mixture from a coil (maybe one slowly failing??) causing inconsistent A/F mixture. another *maybe* is this:
- have the turbos or their seals been replaced? i ask as those little hair dryers (K04's) are waaaaay prone to failure and they will run rich/not deliver boost from leak that the ECU thinks it should based on fuel maps and then CEL can be thrown due to mixture being off.... when in fact it is correct, it is just that there is a base-standard it is dynamically creating and it does not match up.ferfuckssake.
i just realized- is this a B6 or B7 S4? do you have the V8??? lol i could have just wasted 12 min on this entire post....
hahahahaha
- jox0
LOL, he has a B6, Irish. So quit yapping about K04's, haha.
- jox0
Oh and since you didn't mention anything, I assume it doesn't have a rough idle?
- vwsung18t0
i don't even want think about B5 S4's and their shoehorned 2.7 V6. i know lots of people with them. one had the entire engine replaced at 50k miles and he had no mods. i won't get into the ones that were modded.
- madirish0
LOL
awesome.
speaking of rough idle- i just burnt one or 2 of my POS units yesterday. :( need to replace them along with the O2 sensor (from running rich) maybe. sweet...
not really into the 1.8T POS conversion, but maybe. we see.
- madirish0
true. i do know, however, many, MANY people w/ the 2.7tt's running around w/ 450HP+ w/ zero issues. now, i still would not really want one due to removing the entire front end, just to work on pan, turbos and t-belt, etc. that is lame as hell.
- jox0
Don't talk smack about the biturbo - my 2.7TT was pushing 580 4WHP!
These engines are not fragile per se, they've just been driven by people who don't know how to properly cool down the turbos after a hard drive.
