All three of you are correct.
It IS moral relativist bullshit and people do it all the time for religious/cultural reasons. Your observations aren't really in conflict.

i'll just repeat what i said then...

That is fucking disgusting no matter who you ask.The only people who would applaud it are those involved.
And it is not the fucking norm to anyone, it's an abhorration produced during the time of great social upheavel - in particular, civil war.

my point in that letter was not that religion is to blame for all the world's problems like jox said, but that people twist religion to suit their personal agendas.
People are to blame for all atrocities ever done in the name of God or Allah or Jehovah or Vishnu. We are our own worst enemies.

(May 4 07, 09:55)irrational beliefs breed irrational behavior.
athiests murder and rape at lower rates than thiests.

and tempering it with some cultural relativism crap as though it's more acceptable in the "east" is wholly misguided.
you show that to the average Iraqi, and they'd tell you there's something deeply wrong with their country that it produces that kind of hate.
it is a sympton of the spiralling violence between the Yezidi/Muslim communties over the last 4 years. Which i wouldn't expect you to know ANYTHING abotu.
And what the fuck has this got to do with objectivity?

There's "honor Killings" all the time, Middle East, Africa, Asia, India, basically the places where religions are allowed to rule. You could also make the argument that social unrest is the norm as well.

When the rule of law deteriorates, fanaticism takes over. That's a horrible story and just more evidence that religion has no place in dictating law.

(May 4 07, 10:31)I agree with you that irrational beliefs breed irrational acts. Perhaps not all beliefs are irrational, though. I know personally, and have heard many historical accounts of people of faith who are quite lucid, peaceful and genuinely kind. Have a look at the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, John Calvin, St. Francis, William Wilberforce, etc. etc...It's the extremists who depart from faith and head off into their own territory that breed violent patterns. That's a fact.
