I have been a fan of MT since their inception. I refused to actually refer a client nor host my work on their boxes based on the fact that its very clear that they don't have the best reputation with regard to reliability and throughput.
Last year I learned about their grid-server push. It sounded like the same old shared hosting farm but I was intrigued by their claims and stats.
I signed up for a grid-server account and it's been nothing short of pathetic.
If your current site is hosted by MT ping it and take note of the latency. I'm not pushing another host here at all, I'm just saying that I've seen much better performance by a $3 a month account.
Go ahead, test your MT hosted throughput yourself.
My point is, mt in general is yet another company backed by highly effective marketing which has led to many very loyal customers who are on their knees pulling hair. Kind of a VW and iPod thing, of which I have neither.

i think the latency has to do with having the cluster setup respond to dns requests
it has to lookup your site everytime a request comes in
i am on the waiting list at slicehost to see how they stack up
i love how mediatemple works, the cluster is a very good idea, but it is very costly to make it work
the joyent guys are doing it and charging a more reasonable amount for it...i would go with them if i really needed a lot machines to answer the call
either way, the grid could be good if it would just answer quicker...the idea is solid, execution is crap
i think it might be their load balancers or something to that effect

i don't have a VW, i used ot have one though. i do have an ipod shuffle, but i never owned the ipod and VW at the same time.
so, will i make it to paradise?

myobie,
slicehost is very cool. They dont have all of the control panels, and hand-holding pre-installed, but you get root access on your server. Also, the guys that work there are always in their chatroom, so if you have a question, they are quick to respond. Even if it isnt really an 'issue' per se.
if you want to help a brutha out, use my referral code and i will get 5 bucks.
of course there is nothing in it for you, but a warm fuzzy feeling. :D

I've had no problems with mt since signing up. I've had problems with a lot of other hosts though.
What can you do.

funny that VW have such a repuatation overseas. you get one here if you don't make it fast enough outta the supermarket

I haven't had any problems with mt either, but then again I haven't switched to the grid. I was leery to jump in when they opened it up, and still leery now.

akoni: i will send you a twitter message tomorrow (monday)
i am sure mt will clear up the latency problem...i just wish they would have their software installed correctly...i am having imagemagick problems right now...
what is the reputation of vw's overseas?
are the new ones good?

oh and for the record... I drive a 02 Jetta and own an iPod nano. :/

Does the VW have an inordinate amount of electrical/sensor problems?
- heavyt0
at least in the U.S., the VWs have tons of little problems (cup holders break, door handles break, etc)
usually not major problems, but the kind of stuff that is annoying and cost 3-400 to fix.

I agree with what you are saying about MT. I have 5 sites with them and all are on their grid and they all go down every now and then. Also my Mail app sometimes has issues connecting to the email server. I've given them the benefit of the doubt since they just implemented these grid servers and I hope they are just experiencing early issues. But I have been getting frustrated lately. I hope they fix it.
iPods and VWs rule though.

Yea I'm in the US.
I bought the 02 Jetta GLS Turbo after test driving it, loved it. After I bought it, I researched it some more after hearing some weird engine noises. I hear they fall apart at 60k miles, I'm only at 44k right now.
Electrical probs, mass airflow sensor, check engine lights... all coming soon, I'm guessing ;) So far, no probs though.

so, the question is then:
are vw's more reliable than the grid
i would assume absolutely ;)
