Dreamhost got me with their low low prices while I was still a student. At that time (due to fantastic marketing I suppose) MediaTemple had been my first choice, but I couldn't afford it. Now I have almost all my sites running off a single Dreamhost account and am very happy with the cost, reliability, ease, flexibility and the responsiveness of support via email.
In Ireland (for sites that must be .ie) I use Blacknight.ie who I find to be similarly good (although I have only been with them for a short while).

mt gridserver is like poking yourself in the eye.
mt dedicated virtual is solid and blazing fast, and never down. not cheap, but you can resell to some clients and profit.
