I used to be hosted at MT and didn't really have any problems, small or large. I have since moved to Dreamhost because of their great prices. And for the fact that I'm not going to worry if the site goes down once in a while (not that it has happened) since it's my personal site I have hosted there.
I think both are good hosting companies, depending on your needs. But I find that DH is cheaper and doesn't seem to go down much. If you need support all the time, however, you may need MT or something. I've never tried, but I heard that contacting some of these hosting companies, such as DH, is more difficult. Maybe someone else can comment.
- Update: The customer service from Dreamhost has been good, so far.Jaline

MT has gone down hell fast.
I have my site on the grid server (100gigs of online space is damn nice!).
It goes down all the time.
latest problem: MT is not compatible with Comcast!! Can you believe it?
MT basically told me "sorry your email ain't working, it works here..." uh, ok, but it ain't working on my end. Then I got "we are having problems with Comcast, sorry".
Thankfully, Comcast was able to test some settings with me to make it work.
I will not put any clients on them, that's for sure.
There business must have just plummetted since the grid was introduced. My email/site goes down an average of once every two weeks, from a few hours to a day at a time.

i had MT for about 4 months, and it was nothing but problems. moved to DH, its been butter ever since. my 2¢.

Yeah I guess the VW comment came off as potentially offensive to those who own a VW. I only meant their extremely brilliant marketing efforts despite widely known electrical and warranty issues over the past 5-6 years.
MT has a lot of support within the design & dev. community with good reason, but as a few mentioned above, paying more for basically the same specs is not a problem, but come through on reliability and support. One thing thats been killing me is the fact that URCHIN based reporting wasn't inplemented properly for months after the GS line went to market although they clearly boasted URCHIN. I know that doesn't seem like a big deal but wtf... for some reason us on the grid can't run traffic analytics.
I can't imagine that some of those listed on their client roster deal with these types of issues. They'd be better off going back to the basics. Who needs a TB of bandwidth per month and 100GB of space... jesh, cut that into a third and just give me speed, service, and reliability. I'd gladly pay twice as much for it too,

Server companies I use
http://rimuhosting.com < love em, have my dedicated boxes here
http://dreamhost.com < great for cheap sites

used MT for a year or so, switched to Dreamhost a few years ago. Perfectly happy with them and the price is def right. I host a few clients sites under my account and never come near the bandwidth or server space allotted.

I've got a Base VPS with MT been fine to get a hang of things on the server side but a bit pricey for the specs. I'm thinking about getting a VPS with these guys

At work we use MT as ive tried to get all the hosting under one account, its fine and im happy with it but dam its slow as fuck!
FTP to my sites and it takes forever! and accessing sites on my MT is really slow as well.
Personally I use DH, so all my portfolio stuff etc and it does just the same as MT but I think better! and its pretty good for the price

Dreamhost VPS does seem like good value
- Stylus0
actually Dreamhost VPS sucks , no root access kinda defeats the purpose
