Get a 2006 Golf GTI, fun to drive, never breaks etc. or a Mini S
Both fairly cheap fun cars

(Apr 4 07, 15:21)nice! was 5 min away from getting a 03' disco 2 td5. Ended up with a 99' defender td5 and a toyota yaris for the wife instead.

For a good dependable modern car in that range I'd say a BMW 328i coupe:

Or maybe an Audi a3/s3:

But really I'd go for a 1964 rambler american:

Spend a few bucks redoing all the lines, throw a set of new shoes on it (preferably some eagles) and set of new pipes, and you got one hot car.

aaargh i'd love a td5, but my greatest desire is a d90. maybe a 110. i was talking to jox about it yesterday since he just got a 90 too.
u lucky bastards in europe can get those so easily. here they're ridiculously priced, usually at least 10 years old and have at least 60k on them.
i also love gtis and minis. vw used to be really reliable but i'm hearing from more ppl every day that they suck lately. is this true?

thats what research has been telling me...
would love a bmw (dream car) but unsure if i can really afford one or not.
plus the future mrs. prolly would not go for it.

With the right exhaust system, (no tricks, just straight up proper) headers, pipes and muffler, a vintage AMC sounds quite like a modern Ferrari.
I don't think a BMW is out of your range... Just go there and take what you want. The dealers will certainly help you spend yo' money!

if you want reliable, buy Japanese
if you want to look good, buy German
if you're rich, buy Italian
if you're a fat idiot, buy American
...but seriously, I'm selling my Audi... too expensive to maintain. I'm going back to Japanese.

drift thanks.
where can you find this "hidden" number or hidden price rather that the dealer actually pays for the car.
Not MSRP or Dealer invoice price. How can i find out about the hidden incentives?

why not buy from eBay? good deals they have.

I'm not sure I understand your question, rodzilla... the hidden incentives that you don't see as a consumer? you don't want a vehicle with any hidden costs, cuz chances are they aint selling too well... Just ask the dealer straight up, tell them exactly what you want to spend.

ok. i used a buying service called checkbook via Consumer Reports. they called up to 4-5 dealers and see what prices came up. MSRP, MSRP +$650, and MSRP+$1000.
I got an 07 Mazda 3 Hatchback. It is a fantastic ride for the money.
Give me a list of cars and I can send you a pdf from Consumer Reports online. Take it from them straight, all else is just non-statistical thinking. VW, although slightly stylish, just doesn't have a good reliability report.
Good luck.

this will take forever to read, but it's pretty revealing.

best tip i have for you is... do it through the internet...
internet dealers have better discounts . Once a dealership gives you a quote online allow it to start a bidding war with other dealerships.
Also to find your starting price look at the kbb price for the car and don't be afraid to ask for below invoice.
I got a my new car for 2k below invoice! =)

two vDubs, 2002 jetta wagon and 2006 golf. both very reliable and nice builds for cars under 17000.

2007 new or 2006 used: Mazda 6, Pontiac G6, Hyundai Sonata, or a Saturn Aura. All good warranties.
