ok. i used a buying service called checkbook via Consumer Reports. they called up to 4-5 dealers and see what prices came up. MSRP, MSRP +$650, and MSRP+$1000.
I got an 07 Mazda 3 Hatchback. It is a fantastic ride for the money.
Give me a list of cars and I can send you a pdf from Consumer Reports online. Take it from them straight, all else is just non-statistical thinking. VW, although slightly stylish, just doesn't have a good reliability report.
Good luck.

this will take forever to read, but it's pretty revealing.

best tip i have for you is... do it through the internet...
internet dealers have better discounts . Once a dealership gives you a quote online allow it to start a bidding war with other dealerships.
Also to find your starting price look at the kbb price for the car and don't be afraid to ask for below invoice.
I got a my new car for 2k below invoice! =)

two vDubs, 2002 jetta wagon and 2006 golf. both very reliable and nice builds for cars under 17000.

2007 new or 2006 used: Mazda 6, Pontiac G6, Hyundai Sonata, or a Saturn Aura. All good warranties.

everyone here will tell you to buy an Audi and I will tell you to buy a Land Rover, so there is really no help.

What will the primary use of the vehicle be?

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful--I'm pretty clueless about this stuff

i'm w/designerror on that one. although i'm convinced LRs are either for ppl who know their way around cars well, or don't mind frequent service intervals at the stealership. i'm the former.
are you going through a dealership? new? used?

its cool...as am i.
jesse main purpose would be to drive to and from work. prolly 5 mile trip....right now i drive POS - 93 concorde...its a real beauty

That sounds like you can have a little fun with it too, 5 miles aint that far, and reasonable on fuel.
What kind of budget are you wanting/needing to spend?
- rodzilla0
lookin to put 2g down would love
payments right around 300 bills

My advice would be to go to a stealer and play really stupid, remember all the seller shit they let out on you. Go home and research it all on the internets, go back and ask a million qualified counter questions.

i went in wanting to pay X for my vehicle w/a list of options and extras. i told them that when i got there and didn't budge. it only lasted an hour or so and when they were close but wouldn't budge on their end i said, well, thanks for your time...and started walking away.
they gave me everything i wanted. it was LR and they're not salesy, but i think that when they see a definite sale walking in the door and you stand firm, they eventually give in. (if you're not unreasonable of course)
