Don't need a DVD player and looking for a decent system thats not too pricey. What do you have and why does it rock?

I have a 5.1 system and to be honest the whole surround sound thing is a bit over rated. I chose Wharfedale Diamond 8 series speakers all round and a big sony amp as it fitted my budget
If I did it again I would chose a straight stereo setup with a nice high current amp only and buy better gear.
B&W 603 floor standing speakers x 2 and a cambridge audio amp is what I'm am currently leaning towards the most.

Beosound 4. It rocks my fucken world and looks perfect.
It almost hurts when Jack tortures somebody - the plucking sound when he takes someone's eyeball out is as if he's in the same room.

you mean like an all-in-one system? or component based? if the latter (hope) start w/ investing in a great amp and build from there.
man, this new pad in lodo is gonna be in Stuff Mag's 10 best bachelor bads i can feel it.... ;)

i don't think a 5.1 system is overrated. i think it's overkill if you don't have a lot of space. i actually have an open basement so haven't speakers in all corners of the room helps fill the room with sound. madirish said, buy a good amp and get speakers around it. amps don't really get old. you can get a really good amp 20 years old that will sound way better than a new $250 amp.

flash light and some hand puppets?

separates really are the way to go if you have the patience (or money) for it. you can adjust the system to your tastes, for example, investing in a really good center channel can make a huge difference.
i've got various b&w speakers and rotel amps in my system and i'm quite happy

i've been looking at getting a new system too. don't have a lot of space and i've heard a ton of good things about this system

denon is good. i always liked denon and onkyo stuff. i always recommended them when people wanted to go to best buy to get a system.

cheers lads
hadn't really thought about separates before but I'll look into it

what acescence said.
we had a sony 5.1 system which was nice when we upgraded from having nothing. we've quickly outgrown it, so if you're really interested in good sound purchase separate components. a great center channel can make a huge difference.

Cheers marina.
Any links to some decent separates then?

we like this one since we find the sound really clear and rich, and we also like the wood veneer since it goes in a bookshelf...just a stylistic thing. they have a slightly cheaper version and a much more expensive one too:

i've been happy with onkyo's line of products, b&w is also good. what's your price range jevad? here's an option under $900.

I have an older Harman Kardon 500W receiver that I bought off of Lemmy's Wart with 2 JBL front speakers and a sub box for $300 used, then I got the Sony surround kit for another hondo.
Works fine. I'm not much of an audiophile though, I just need surround. I am not trying to spend $500 on braided speaker wire and all of that other nonsense.

also, keep in mind whether you need certain technologies, such as hdmi, thx etc.

I have a Yamaha RX-V1700 Receiver coupled with Bose surround sound speakers. It's amazing.
I was at Target over the weekend and was messing around with these. OMG... for only 3 pieces they blew me away with their huge sound.

It's making me think about selling what I have and getting these. I'm all for minimalistic stuff in my house right now.
- -sputnik-0
are those 3.1 doug? do they compare well to 5.1?
- k0na_an0k0
I'm not sure sputnik but honestly, they were louder, crisper and clearer than I thought they'd be. They rivaled the 5.1 10 speaker setup I have at home for half the price. :(
I was really impressed.
