i don't think a 5.1 system is overrated. i think it's overkill if you don't have a lot of space. i actually have an open basement so haven't speakers in all corners of the room helps fill the room with sound. madirish said, buy a good amp and get speakers around it. amps don't really get old. you can get a really good amp 20 years old that will sound way better than a new $250 amp.
