Would you absolutely buy core duo 2 if you were buying it today or is core duo still a pretty damn good machine to stick with?
I don't feel too strong about spending extra $500 unless there's a reason... and i'm not going to be doing 3D nowhere in the near future.
Thanks.

i asked this question to one of my techie friends back when i was buying my laptop.
if i recall correctly, i believe he said something along the lines of the core 2 duos running cooler, therefore giving you longer battery life.
basically...he didn't convince me the core 2 was worth it, so i wound up with a regular core duo and have has no problems so far.

"core solo/duo" was just the apple name for pentium. Core 2's are the next gen and run much faster with less power.

monNom, the question wasn't which one is faster... that part is easy to figure out :)

Core 2 Duo processors of 2.0GHz and more have 4mb cache instead of 2 (meaning 1.83 don't). I don't know if it improves speed dramatically.
Anyway, both types frequent apple online refurb stores recently..

I wouldn't buy anything Apple at the moment. Following the guide at http://buyersguide.macrumors.com… everything is either close to or way past it's update cycle.
Hang in there... new shit on the way.

Apple booked an event for April 15th, I read somewhere..

Yeah it's aimed at broadcasting/video so expected new MacBook Pro's at that one.
I'm keen on a Mac Laptop and there is no way I'm parting with any cash for Mac hardware until Leopard comes out.
There WILL be new hardware released when 10.5 finally comes out.

techically, since the c2d is a 64 bit processor, it might benefit from future enhancements in whatever OS you're using. also, it runs cooler, hence longer battery life usually. other than that, with the same clock speed, you'd be hard pressed to find the c2d to be faster than the same clocked cd.

What type of puter are you buying? $500 difference between the 2 seems really high. I just paid $250 for the core 2 duo. Are you buying a laptop or desktop? Mac or PC? Pre-Owned or New?

um, doubt that. now would be a good time to get a mbp as they were "just" updated with the c2d. i don't think you'll see these updated until intel starts shipping their new chipset, santa rosa, which is slated for may, but who knows how long it'll be before apple incorporates them. remember how long it took them to make the switch from the core duo to the core 2 duo? it was months. i think at the earliest it'll be wwdc in june. that buyer's guide is a little off as apple's update patterns have changed since the switch to intel. the only machine i'd consider waiting for is the 8-core mac pro which apple should deliver as soon as intel's new desktop chipset (stoakley-seaburg) is shipping.
it's ridiculous to play the waiting game with apple now, no one has any idea when updates will come. it's been repeated so many times but buy it if you need it.
back on topic, the biggest difference would be core 2 duos are 64 bit and run cooler.

Oh, I meant MacPro's, btw.
Buying now would be a really gay thing to do.
Just look at how much refurb stuff is on the Apple store at the moment – they are trying to shift that shit before the new wave comes out.

afair Core2Duos have firewire 800 and new wifi card, run cooler and accept up to 3GB ram. Sold as refurbs already.
- arseni0
Thanks guys,
that was some info to consider.I'm thinking of buying a mbp17"... But i didn't see refurbs for core duo 2 available, so i thought they only sell them new.
Apple always comes out with new stuff, so if you want to wait for the greatest thing, you may as well never buy from them. I personally don't really care if in 5 months they're going to launch something 2times faster.. There are people who use computers 3-5 years old and are happy.

Dude there is a 17" MBP up there for 1999 right now, down from 2799 or something. I'm so damn close to buying it out from under you my mouth is watering. haha
