Exercise Ball

So, I'm thinking of getting one of these as an office chair. Bad idea? Lame? Dorkus? Best thing ever?
Is anyone using one of these?

you mean like one of those yoga ball things? we have one at home and it gets a lot of use when friends come over. no one uses it for exercise though. they are surprisingly comfortable for short periods of time.

I use one for just such a thing at home. Works great, and when you want to stretch, you just roll right back on that ball...viola!

they are not good if you have lower back problems.

i actually disagree with morilla - from personal experience, they have helped alleviate back problems. an exercise ball will also increase your "core" strength which helps keep your back healthy in general.

i had a good laff at that. but seriously, thanks all for the opinions. My back has been killin me as of late thanks to this here chair. I'd like to give something different a try.

I concur with those who concur with those who concur with sander.
But make sure you get the right size and only use it for certain time periods.

yeah, I dont know anything.
only that my L5 is completely compressed and my 4th is now going to. In some degree of constant pain for 6 years and see someone twice a week. And they also say not to use one.
What do I know.

My mom has had surgery on her disk many times now. She's tried nearly everything, and nothing seems to alleviate the pain. Right now she's basically using the exercise ball sometimes, as well as taking swimming exercise classes and tries not to climb stairs.

yeah, they tell me that my HK chair which has lower support is better than the ball. I get core training from the gym so I don't worry about that at the office.
Surgery is the last option for me.

My mom had the chance of becoming paralyzed when she had my sister. The doctors told her that she could have the baby, but that risk would be there. And obviously she couldn't have surgery at that time.

I have a kneeling chair at work now, it's the only kind that doesn't add strain to my lower back.
McKenzie method helped me and my gf with our chronic lower back problems in about 2-3 weeks. It is a set of exercises so simple, that you'd never believe would work. And they do work like a charm.
There are also do's and dont's for the future, like don't bend for the soap (squat instead).
Get a physiotherapist/chiropractor licensed in McKenzie, it's worth it.

i would say that if you have back pain, you should really get a desk that adjusts to heights where you can stand or sit. you can go cheap (ie: http://www.keysan.com/big/piccbl… )
or relatively cheap (ie. http://desks4computers.com/Merch… )
or something completely auto/electric. sky's the limit :)

Exercise and develop your back and abdominal muscles. It will reduce back stain.
