i think for myself, i love build's previous work so much that i feel these dont hold the luster or the intense visuals of his previous work which is always very busy and lots of shapes and verbage and just basicly eye candy.
either or its always great to see artists trying to change up their ideals or their style to grow into new ones.
as an artist myself i like to see more super visuals that super minimalism, especially when its from an artist that constantly blows my mind with their work.
eh..am i considdered an nt hater now that i gave my 2¢?

complexity does not equal great work
using the simple object for theme is greatness

I have a feeling that with some of you there is no such as being pretentious in your eyes.

it's impossible to judge them from a website. From his previous work I'm guessing they have a rich, impactful, tactile presence in person

That is not speaking about this piece at all, just some of your reasons for liking it.
speaking in riddles to expalin it and shit.

Baldessari used the dot as a decorative void. Build seems on that tack. Because of the high degree of craftsmanship and the emptiness of the gesture the posters are pretty but making them more significant than that is pulling a long bow.

I kinda agree with you e-pill.
but.. art is supposed to provoque reaction, and there is 82 posts here that confirm that this posters does that.

When I look at them, I look past the print itself. And think about how they would look as a series on the wall. Which would work great in many cases, and would probably pose more questions than a Robert Williams'. Two thumbs fresh.

i once had a dead mice in a clear resin as part of a gallery show
it was amazing view since the mice exploded as the resin mixed with the activator, it heated up and captured the semi liquid explosion.
everyone hated it. felt discussed by it. but i felt it captured the moment of human thought in anger.

oh im not saying build's art doesnt produce reaction, i am just comparing this set of art to any previous art i have seen online or off.
at the build show in brooklyn last year, it was the first time i ever heard of build let alone seen his work in person.
i was awe struct when seeing the pieces as they each held a magnificant level of design and workmanship.
on a whole in comparison this entire series doesnt capture the intense feeling i got from any of the works i had seen with my own eyes.
not saying build has gotten weak in his work, but i am saying this set of work doesnt give justice to the work i had seen from him.

provoque
That should be an optional spelling for the word.
It would be nice if these prints were square. Then if you bought enough you could construct a Damien Hirst.

No I respect that.
And I'm not interested in complexity.
But I do think that can be an easy way out sometimes. How many logos use circles? And I'm sure the argument about a simple object as beautiful form is put out by the people who designed it. But that has lost basically all meaning from ridiculous overuse. I know these dot posters put a different light on the idea of circles, but it's still all about simple shapes and colour. Designers love that.
Michael admitted his dad would laugh at him if he showed him these posters.
So who does he design for? How much stuff would his dad laugh at? Maybe Michael can tell us, I don't know. I think there's a total lack of discussion on this, and people find comfort with "ooo that's too expensive", "that paper is gorgeous". I respect that, also, but then there is nothing that follows. THAT is the discussion. So what?
I don't mean to knock these posters, because they're good. There's a beautiful labouring process involved, colour and scale keep them as a set but unique, and for me the ideas about the way we view our lives through size and use are lovely.
The point I'm making is that as a general rule it would be useful if people talked about ideas, purely, as a side issue on these things.
You go through the threads here and it's rarely talked about. People take the piss, argue and ask why a vector has an extra bump on it, but there's rarely anything to really speak of.
A lot comes down to design for designers, which is bollocks. Very lovely, beautifully produced, exquisite bollocks.

(Feb 26 07, 11:41)Maybe... I like them though, regardless of who made them.
I remember a series of prints I was working on that got, for the most part, a fairly poor reception here.
I wonder if having builds name to them would have helped... or if they were just pish in the first place...

all i can say is that its very pretty

Mrdobs - no doubts, in this case we know mike can draw. If that's all we saw from the noob, then there's reason for speculation.

I just think it is weak when people are labeled haters because they don't kiss certain people's ass'. It is pretentious and I don't want any part of that garbage.
