I am in a tight decision making situation. I got an offer from another employr, offering me 10g more than what I do now inc benfs. The place I am now, is good, and stable and have not asked my boss for a raise yet, was thinking about it. This new place pays more but I don't feel so secure, I don't see much stability.
Is the money worth it? What can I do to get some security if i decide to change?

same city?

Ask your boss for a raise... Tell him you have a 10g+ offer from somewhere else. If he likes you, he'll keep you.

yup, same city. same type of work, only $ difference.
Well, this new office has an eighth floor ocean view ;)

yeah, that's my first plan, but I need a plan B too. I am trying to foresee all my options, good or bad.

why apply to a new place before asking for a raise, and then complain when you actually get the job ??
if i was your boss i'd be pissed to have an employee come to me with an offer from another company as leverage for a raise..

Will the new place enrich your portfolio with new, great things?
wish i could have an ocean view! (no windows at all)

Can you elaborate on how this other place doesn't make you feel "secure" and you "don't see much stability"?
I'd do what Calles suggested.

I guess it depends, maybe think about where you will be in a couple of years, maybe the place you are at now, has a better pay scale. And better chance for advancement. I'd talk with your current boss. 10k a year isn't that much, you may not like the new job, at least the one you are at, sounds like you've got some level of comfort.

i know what u mean spl, I was going to ask for a raise before the end of the month. And no, I didn't apply to this job, I did freelance for them, and they liked me and now they offered me a full time job.
See I am not that bad...

Listen to me, listen very carefully to me.
Money is not teh be all and end all.
If you are not struggling right now, then don't even use the extra money as leverage.
Look at where you are now. Do you like it? Is the work fun? Do you like the people? If so, why bother going somewhere else? Just for money?

jevad would never make it in the wutang clan...

You don't have to strong-arm your boss with someone else's offer, just explain to him that you enjoy working there, and ask if there is anything he can do to compensate.
Rule #1: Look out for yourself.

I second Jevad.
Never underestimate having a good boss and /or good employees.
Good for you to have this kind of opportunity.

take the new job straight up. it's good to be uncomfortable some times.

(Jan 30 07, 13:20)oh i see :)
very sweet then.still sounds like your current place is nicer..
if your boss is ok with you doing freelance on the side i'd explain the situation and say i want to stay but $$$ make a difference etc.
really depends on what you need the most, change or money (or both).

take the fucking money, for cliff's sake.
being nice never paid the mortgage.

this EXACT thing happened to me a bit ago. My previous employer (as an intern) met with me and offered 10k more. I thought about it long and hard. Then I straight up told my boss what the situation was. I told her to match the offer, and I would stay. She respected me for being an honest employee she could trust and matched the offer.
I left the prospective employer with an open mind of the future...

i third jevad. i once moved from a decent job to one which i thought might be better w/50% more pay, but it turned into a nightmare and it took me almost a year to recover from it and find something i liked again.
make sure you're comparing quality or work and life, not just money.
