this EXACT thing happened to me a bit ago. My previous employer (as an intern) met with me and offered 10k more. I thought about it long and hard. Then I straight up told my boss what the situation was. I told her to match the offer, and I would stay. She respected me for being an honest employee she could trust and matched the offer.
I left the prospective employer with an open mind of the future...
