Hello Folks
i have a issue with trying to make a boat in illustrator using the 3d tools:
Here is the trouble:
http://www.mybrokenshoe.com/misc…
any mathamatical wizards understand how to achieve it?
In fact does it actually make sense?

Jesus Christ, I need to upgrade my Illustrator - 3d extrude and bevel, eh? I'm still living in a distinctly 2d world :(

no offense, but the time you've wasted on making illustrator behave like a real 3d program you could've faked the boat by just drawing it.

If i can sort this out i will be able create the boat in any postition rather than drawing it again and again....
anyone else got any ideas?

use a 3D app? like maya?

Go back into Effect > 3D > Extrude and Bevel. In the cube graphic in the upper left, hold down the command key and drag an edge of the cube, watch the numbers and wait for it to change by 90º.
If you use a 3d program, fine, Maya would even export vectors, but no point in using a nuke when a sling shot will do.

the answer to this is very simple, instead of having your shape that becomes the pink 3D with the flat edge on the left, simply invert it so the flat end is now facing right, and apply the same 3D effect to that shapee and it should fit perfectly into the area you would want it to be placed near.
i can illustrate an example later when i get home. its very simple.

all well and good, epill - but 'HOW, exactly?' is what he is asking..

i know and i am too busy at the moment to do it, but a little playing with that effect and a alot can be learned. its just mathamatical points.

edit > expand appearance and line them up using the align palette.
unless you want to preserve editing features.

Hello Folks thanks for taking a look, i tried both CyBrain and e-edd's ideas, CyBrain's gets close but the numbers don't work like you would imagine. I grabbed the edge and visually pulled through 90 degrees giving the numbers shown next to the model.
However doing this causes some errors in algnement (possibly because i am doing it by hand?)
edd-e's version creates a shape which is just oppositie - though this may be because i did it wrong?

(Jan 12 07, 08:40)if you're worried about that tiny little gap in your example image, and moving the points a hair to fix is not an option, then i think you should be looking at more precise tools.. like a CAD plugin or standalone software.

+ here's the correct way to draw a boat in illustrator... good ol'fashioned vanishing points and horizon lines:

Insanity, that boat is incredible, wonder what his rates are like :P
- CyBrain0
Yeah, that boat rocks. I wonder how many hours (weeks) that took.

just incase anyone iinterseted i posted on the adobe forum too, see what they thought and was offered this solution:
---------------
---------------1. Open the Bevels.ai file. (It's in your Plug-Ins folder.)
2. Draw a circle. Delete all but the upper left segment of it. (Or, just use the Arc Tool to draw a quarter arc.
3. Drag the quarter arc shape to the Symbols Palette. Name the new Symbol "HalfRound".
4. Save the Bevels file.
5. In your boat document, instead of drawing a cross-section of the boat hull, draw the shape of the deck as one closed path.
6. Extrude & Bevel. Select the Outer Bevel button. Change the bevel to your HalfRound bevel. Turn on the preview checkbox.
7. Adjust the Bevel Height and Extrusion Depth to adjust the roundness and depth ("draft") of the hull, respectively.
---------------
---------------And i didn't even know you could make your own bevels!
- CyBrain0
Wow, that bevel approach is quite clever.
Can you get them to put this shit in Flash, for the love of God.
