just incase anyone iinterseted i posted on the adobe forum too, see what they thought and was offered this solution:

---------------1. Open the Bevels.ai file. (It's in your Plug-Ins folder.)
2. Draw a circle. Delete all but the upper left segment of it. (Or, just use the Arc Tool to draw a quarter arc.
3. Drag the quarter arc shape to the Symbols Palette. Name the new Symbol "HalfRound".
4. Save the Bevels file.
5. In your boat document, instead of drawing a cross-section of the boat hull, draw the shape of the deck as one closed path.
6. Extrude & Bevel. Select the Outer Bevel button. Change the bevel to your HalfRound bevel. Turn on the preview checkbox.
7. Adjust the Bevel Height and Extrusion Depth to adjust the roundness and depth ("draft") of the hull, respectively.
