it seems you may be missing the point. it is about shaping a new world, a virtual one, that has a great impact on the daily experiences and opinions of people in the world...

And I wished i had missed that post a while ago where you linked to an "artist" who created cat purses.
I couldn't believe it when I saw her grinning face, knife in hand, and dead skinned cat on kitchen counter.
Oh, yes, it certainly is shaping a new world.

and behold, right here we have an example of the true benefits of online communication.

discussion and arguement can only exist when it is triggered by controversy.

this was an idividual artist that posted her controversial art online and here we have a person who rejects it on a moral level.

which is great and is also exemplary to the greatness of "people-driven" internet.

if there was no internet you would probably have never seen it and now you have a chance to communicate about her and the project or even go as far as sending her an email to voice your opinion about this and perhaps teach her a moral lesson.

which, if it really upsets you, i would honestly recommend you to do so.

You can spew all the enthusiastic utopian delight in technology you like, JoshClancy - you'll probably find that myself and the other NTers are right there with you (i'm two-way interacting on the internets right now). What we're questioning is Time's opportune commandeering of the zeitgeist for what is probably little than middle media's own medium term commercial interest.

What's wrong with just choosing a person to be 'Person of the Year'?

flavorful, the internet has been extremely beneficial to me.

and to stick with the web2 corporate sites, i say youtube has been very beneficial for me too as i have seen and downloaded countless interviews and documentaries and movie shorts that learned me a lot and added to my intellect.

it is not just about seeing hot naked women or movies of kittens and people doing dumb things, it is all about cultivation, moderation, filtering information for your benefit.

it has opened up the door to the mediocre.

and so to maturity - the medium becomes the message.

mediocrity has always existed among people. before internet it was television, before television it was in theatres (farce, operetta etc) and so on.

Janne, the internet has been beneficial to me too. If it wasn't for it, I'd probably be living under a bridge.

However, you use the internet to your distinct advantage.

    You're in the minority.

It's not even close to the people who actually use the internet to "better" themselves, to those who use it as simple mindless entertainment.

For that matter perhaps 'TiVo' should be 'Person of the Year' because it lets jerks like me tape shows without having to be home, but at the same time not having me miss my 'programs'.

Or are we simply overlooking the obvious by not picking a person.

    'Electricity' is pretty consistent.

    So is 'Water.'

The link about the cat bag maker lady, haha.

I'm glad I know enough about it to not click (nothing in terms of this thread, just my stomach ... even though I hate cats, haha).

I have to agree with Crouwel...

Times have changed. Get over it and with it. Never has the world been so accessible and if we've learned anything from history you can bet that the more means of communication the better. Its the transferring of ideas that keeps things progressing.

Yeah you can be pessimistic and bitch and moan about corporations and money hungry executives but its ALWAYS been that way. The whole "Everyones out to get me" approach is going to get you nowhere.

I can not tell you how positive technology and web 2 has been for me in the last year on all levels... whether it be business, networking, entertainment. Why? because I don't run away from it I use it to my advantage.

even though i am not one to set up a coalition of us vs the rest here i have to admit that i have to agree wholeheartedly with you, Josh.

    You're in the minority.

    ---

this minority is a minority not to be missed, the sheer amount of people benefitting intellectually and economically from these communities runs into the millions.

and even that may be a minority of the total population i think this amount of people is large enough not to be ignored by Times, and for that i take off my hat to them.

My mediocre comment was towards musicans and artists. Never before has the industry witnessed a flood of sub-par talent. And there is really nothing they can do.

I don't think anyone here is running away from the web and how it is "evolving" (if you even believe in 'evolution') ... but that's exactly my point.

    We are internet nerds.

Also, seriously, you use the internet to your advantage?

Reading that makes it seem like you actually think you deserve being grouped in with 'you'.

Having "you" as 'Person of the Year' is fucking absurd.

I guess that's mostly my point.

    YouTube?

    Thanks.

Thanks for causing countless threads here at NT.

    MySpace?

    Thanks.

I really give a flying shit about what some jackass I knew from 3rd grade is not doing with their life.

    Flickr?

    Thanks.

The fact you never took a class on photography almost makes it seem non-existant since you bought a digital camera.

Most people do use the internet to their advantage. They want to find, learn, observe, etc, etc. They may not be conscious of this idea and there are idiots all over the world, but that doesn't mean they didn't exist before.

All of these "web 2.0" things you've listed, including Youtube, Flickr, Myspace, have all been useful to me in some way. I spend more time than I should on these websites though. You even have profiles at some of these sites.

And of course people say that they don't care about "that person who I used to know" but then why do they spend time checking out their profiles and stay on the internet for hours? Because they're curious.

  • Nairn0

Let me be the first to admit - I actively use the internet to my own disadvantage,

Warren Buffet has given almost 30 billion dollars to charity.

    Billion.

    $30,000,000,000.00

He didn't buy every Web 2.0 company, he could have.

He invested the money into the real betterment of people.

I'm sorry Crouwel, that was an example of a person.

An actual living, breathing human being.
