flavorful, I'd have to disagree. I think there are more positive aspects of these programs compared to negative. There is that privacy issue, but at the same time communication is more expansive than it ever was.

People are addicted to the internet, and would rather spend time on t heir online communities than go outside.
This is a stretch of course, but it'd be like making Philip Morris of Marlboro fame the 'Person(s) of the Year.'
I'm not saying people in this thread per say, however, I do know people who would rather stay in and play poker all nite than go outside, people who would rather read about everything going on in their friends lives than go out and join them.
It's kind of disgusting.
Then again, maybe I'm looking at a few bizarre cases.

I do agree about that point, flavor.

i do disagree. as the way you point this oout you make it seems like everyone is like that. and thus all of this is non-beneficial. perhaps you need some introspective analysis on what you said, thinking *most* people are hopelessly addicted by the few that you have seen in such a state?
for instance:
i am not addicted to flickr, but learned a lot by looking at other peoples photographs and by joining and reading groups, again created by the people etc.very beneficial to me and many many others.

I think we have more of a penchant to agree with the selection based on how we use the internet.

lol flavorful
er..
I think anyway - you mean everyone in this thread suffers from occasional, unhealthy, bouts of NT addiction?
- ********0
Not particularly, but looking at all of our stats I imagine it would make for a hard case to disagree with that, hahah.
- Jaline0
I agree about many people spending too much time on the internet because I do it myself.
- Jaline0
...but of course there are lots of people who don't.
Everything needs moderation.

It's still a cop out by time. When all this great "collaborative" web 2.0 stuff actually topples a government, stops global warming or isn't snapped up and co-opted by some corporate giant (YouTube/Google) you let me know. Until then it's the latest wrinkle in distract the suckers with "empowerment while we sell them some new washing detergent".
My anarchists roots are showing today, and I'm not apologizing..
And Time has sucked for the last ten years or so...

I love you, TheBlueOne.
You've just stated much more exactly, succintly and eloquently what my thoughts on the matter are.

you make valid points blueone, nairn, flavor .. but really, how could you expect more from this magazine?
Since 1927, TIME Magazine has chosen a man, woman, or idea that "for better or worse, has most influenced events in the preceding year."
in 1982 the computer was man of the year .. 2006 isn't much off of their usual scale.

I'm not exactly sure to be honest. I really haven't given it much thought, haha.
Warren Buffet would be up there. Unless Time is trying to make it a point that you can't buy the title.
- Jaline0
yeah, I'm too burnt out to have a serious discussion about that, haha.

"valid points". just because something has logic coherence doesn't mean it has any worth - given that the premisses may be the wrong ones.
in this case, having the "masses shaping the world" is a terrible one, because the mass does not exist per se. it's just people trying to make a buck through an enourmous amount of gibberish that has no worth, is always mediocre, and is consuming us all, and our time just to wade through.
